Novatel Wireless has created a credit card size Wifi card which creates a wireless hotspot zone for all your various Wifi enabled gadgets such as laptops, iPhone, iPod touch, PSP, or whatever. Up to five devices can be connected to the card.
Any gadget person can tell you just how much they would appreciate Internet access on the road but finding one can be slim unless you happen to travel near a Starbucks.
Novatel Wireless created the MiFi which basically works like a wireless router (EVDO modem) and only a bit bigger than a credit card in thickness. With this device you can create you own wireless hotspot using the mobile phone network. The device turns the high speed 3G data (or UMTS/HSDPA) networks into your personal Hotspot bubble.
Currently it’s available on Verizon Wireless and Sprint.
Here are some key MiFi features:
- 40 hours of standby time
- 4-5 hours of actual use
- 3.50 x 2.32 x 0.35 inches and weighs 2.05oz
- Credit Card Size
- WPA2-PSK and WEP encryption
- SPI Firewall
- No software needed – all you need to do is create a Wireless Profile on your laptop or mobile device.
- Connect multiple devices (up to 5)
- $60 for 5GB which is pretty decent
Anyone who owns a iPod touch can turn it into a iPhone using Skype to call out. How cool is that! I hope Rogers Wireless here in Canada will adopt this soon. PLEASE ROGERS!
