When I bought my PS3 the deciding factor for me was which Playstation 3 was backwards compatible with the older Playstaion 2 and PS1 games. Right now the current 40 GB PS3 model cannot play PS2 games, Sony took this feature out to cut costs. But the more expensive one with the 80 GB hard drive can play most PS2 and PS1 titles. The older and discontinued 40 GB and 60 GB PS3 were also backwards compatible.
Do you plan on just playing games and watching Blu-ray movies and nothing more? The cheaper PS3 only has a 40 GB hard drive which is fine if you don’t plan on downloading and storing videos, music, and pictures on the disk.
So the only big differences between the cheaper 40 GB PS3 and the more expensive 80 GB PS3 are the hard drive size and backwards compatibility with older Playstation titles. And the current 80 GB Playstation 3 comes bundled with “MotorStorm” an off road racing game.
As I mentioned above most older PS, and PS2 games are compatible with the PS3 although not all of them are so if there is a older game you really want to play check here to see if it will work on the PS3.
So which ps3 should I buy? It all depends on your needs the 80 GB Playstation 3 is the best but not for everybody.
