One of the best web camera I’ve ever used and most of you might already own one or maybe even two, its your digital camcorder! If you got a DV camcorder with Firewire connection sometimes called i.LINK, or IEEE1394 depending on the manufacture. Your computer will also need to have a Firewire port in order to connect. With my Sony miniDV camcorder I can use it for Skype, streaming video through Stickam or Ustream and I didn’t need to install any third party software the computer just saw it as a external webcam. The quality is awesome, far better than most webcams on the market.
The computer should automatically see your DV camcoder when plugged in but that may not be true for everyone. Here are some third party software you can try:
DVdriver -is a software tool that lets you use your camcorder with any software that works with webcams. Costs about 20 bucks but there is a free trial download.
WebCamDV – software to turn your Firewire DV camcorder to a webcam. Its not free but there is a free trial to see if it works.
Using a digital camcorder is a great alternative for a webcam the quality is awesome because DV camcorders have higher quality optics than your average webcam. But if you don’t have one lying around here are a couple good quality webcams to check out.
