I heard from a friend that Linux is better than Windows. What are some advantages and disadvantages of running Linux versus Windows?
If you are a bit of a geek and like to be more involved in the operating system than running Linux can be better, but if you just like stuff to work and not having to fiddle around with settings and command lines than Windows would be a better environment.
Some advantages of running Linux:
- great learning tool for seeing how operating systems work
- reliable and very stable – Linux computers can run years without a reboot
- very secure – no viruses or spyware
- Linux can run on very old hardware
- great community for support and questions
- it’s completely free
Linux Disadvantages:
- a bit of a learning curve – you have to do research most times to do simple tasks
- many programs wont run on Linux – very little third party support
- not good for gaming
- lack of driver support, some hardware and most software cannot run in Linux
Some of my favorite Linux Distros:
- Ubuntu – this is my personal favorite
- Linux Mint
- Mandriva Linux
- Fedora
If you are curious about Linux you could download “Live CD” burn it to a disc and run Linux on the CD/DVD and when you’re done take out the CD without affecting your regular Windows system. How cool is that!
