My PS3 Slim had a very similar issue where the controller would not connect and I would need to press the Power button on the PS3 before it would work. I fixed this issue by re-syncing the PS3 controller(s).
Here’s how to re-sync the controller:
Find the small little hole on the back of the PS3 controller, that’s the reset button.
Grab yourself a paper clip, unfold it and use it to press the reset button.
After pressing the reset button, connect the controller to the Playstation 3 via the USB cable then press the PS button. The pairing should happen automatically.
