“I frequently post images on my website but I want to make the files size of the pictures smaller to save bandwidth. Whats a good way to reduce image file size?”
Its always a good idea to keep your image file sizes to a nice level not only to save from bandwidth but for better accessibility as well. Not everyone uses high speed internet a small percentage still use dial up, oh the horror. By keeping your images nice and small your pages will load much quicker.
If you happen to own Photoshop it has a feature where you can “save for the web” and that allows you to reduce images to more appropriate file size. I will recommend a free program instead called IrfanView, it works great and its free. There’s nothing better than free software, especially good free software.
Here’s how to reduce your image file sizes using IrfanView
1. Download IrfanView
2. Launch IrfanView.
3. Click “File” then “Open, or click on the little open icon folder. Browse for the image file you want to reduce and click “Open”.
4. The image should now be open in IrfanView. Now click “File” again but this time scroll down to “Save as…”
5. Two windows will open up side by side, in the main window go to “Save as type” and select “JPG-JPG/JPEG Format” from the drop down menu.
6. In the other window at the very top go to “Save quality” and use the slider to set the quality. The lower you go the smaller (and poorer) the image file will be. Click Save when finished.
7. The image file should now be smaller depending on how much you set the quality. To check the file sizes to compare with the original image right click on the image and select “Properties” and there you can see the file size of the image.
There’s also a handy plugin (or stand-alone) for IrfanView that will allow you to reduce image file sizes check it out at http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/download/.
