I have a old Dell computer about 5 years old and it’s been getting slower and slower. How can I make it faster? It takes me forever doing to anything especially trying to watch videos online which can take forever.
You have a pretty old computer which will be slow know matter what you do but here are some ways to make the computer run faster.
Go to “Start -> Run ->” and type “msconfig” in the dialog box. Look for the “Start up” tab and click on it. Remove any programs you don’t need. It’s usually safe to remove all the programs at start up except for any security programs you may have like anti-virus programs.
Cleaning up the hard drive. Remove or delete any programs you no longer use or need. Next thing you can do is run “Disk Clean-up” and “Disk Defragment”.
Scan your computer with an anti-virus and several different anti-spyware programs. AVG is a free antivirus, and for free antispyware try Spybot Search and Destroy, SuperAntispyware, and last but not least AdAware.
Get more RAM. Upgrading you memory is probably the best way to get your old computer running faster. Check your computer manual or online to see which kind of ram you need. Adding ram is fairly simple procedure.
Reinstall Windows. Reinstalling Windows will take your computer back to the day you first bought your computer. You will notice the speed difference from a fresh install of Windows for sure. Find your “Windows Recovery CD” or Windows install disc that came with the computer. Remember to back up important files on to a CD or DVD because this will wipe the hard drive clean and all data will be deleted.
