“How do I format my microSD to get more storage space on the Nintendo Switch?”
The regular Nintendo Switch only comes with 32 GB of internal storage and the newer OLED version of the Switch comes with 62 GB of built-in storage. For casual gamers the 32 GB or 64 GB might be good enough but if you consider yourself more hardcore than you’ll probably need to expand your storage to download new games and DLC content from the Switch eShop.
Luckily, Nintendo makes it pretty easy to expand storage on the Switch. You’ll need to pick up a microSD card and format it on the Switch before using.
The Nintendo Switch supports these types of mircoSD cards:
microSD (up to 2GB)
microSDHC (up to 32GB)
microSDXC (64 GB or higher)
Instructions for Formatting mircoSD card for the Switch:
- While the Nintendo Switch is powered off insert the microSD card into the system.
- From the Switch home page scroll over to ‘System Settings’ and select it by pressing the A button.
- At the System Settings page scroll all the way down to ‘System’.
- Go down to ‘Formatting Options’.
- Select ‘Format microSD card’.
- The next page will warn you about how formatting the microSD card on the Switch will delete everything and cannot be restored. Do you want to ‘Continue’.
- If you’re ready to continue go ahead and press ‘Format’. The Switch will then restart. After restart your Switch will have more storage for games and DLC content.
