Here’s a quick guide on how to convert videos to psp format or the mp4 format. For this guide I’m going to use a free program called 3GP Converter. You can download the program here. After downloading the program, unzip the folder and you should have a single folder called 3GP_Converter.
Open the folder and click on “Setup”, a new window will emerge don’t be alarmed if nothing is legible that’s because it’s all in Japanese right now. Near the bottom of the window select “English”. Now on the main window, scroll down and select “Model:Mp4 for PSP” and click “Apply” to finish setup.
A new window will appear this is the one you will be using to convert videos to play on the PSP. Before we start converting videos to the psp choose the quality of the conversion I personally like “368×208/29fps/768kbps/ Stereo/128kbps” this cuts down the file size a little bit and I still get good quality video from the conversion. Experiment with the settings and see which one you prefer. The “Output Directory” is where you want the converted files to be stored. So to start converting videos simply click, drag, and drop your video files into the main area and it should start converting (you can add more than one). Converting the video(s) may take some time depending on the size of the video and the kind of power your computer has. For me an average movie file takes about 1hr to convert to the psp format.
The 3GP converter for the PSP is far from perfect, I get error messages on some video files I try converting, but for the most part it does a pretty decent job on different video file formats including avi, and wmv. There’s also been some reports on people have troubles with this on Vista, if you are having troubles with this try this alternative PSP Video 9 it’s another decent and free psp converter.
