I recently bought a old computer from a friend. The computer is for my kids and I don’t want them to stumble across something inappropriate like adult stuff. How do I make sure the computer is completely clean and safe for my kids to use?
The best way to clean up a computer is to start fresh. If you have a copy of the Windows install disc or recovery CD you should definitely format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Some computer companies keep the Windows installation on a separate partition on the hard drive.
By formatting and reinstalling Windows you will erase everything on that hard drive and completely clean it out so this is a good time to back up anything you may have on the computer.
If you do not have a copy of Windows to install that’s OK too because there is a better alternative to Windows anyways and it’s completely free. Ubuntu Linux is a free operating system that can be downloaded for free and installing Ubuntu is just as easy as installing Windows. With Ubuntu installed you wont have to worry about your kids getting viruses or spyware on the computer because there are none.

ubuntu is not a very user friendly operating system especially for kids and many softwares come as exe files which will not run in ubuntu .if an internet ic connected to the computer try using k9 web protection which is free for home use. or if needed the other harddisks can be formatted

Linux in general isn’t as user friendly as Windows but it’s great for a casual user who just want to browse the web and watch videos.

I wouldn’t know about user-friendly because I avoid those “users.” Linux is much more power-user-friendly though.
