“How do I charge my Kindle Fire”
Use the power adapter that came with the Kindle Fire, start charging the Fire by connecting one end to a wall socket and the other end to the device itself.
When the Kindle Fire is charging the power button light will be orange. The light will turn green when the device is fully charged and ready for use.
If you get no light or it’s not charging, double-check the connections to make sure they are fully connected on the Kindle Fire and the wall socket. You may also want to try another electrical wall socket.
“How longs does it take to fully charge the Kindle Fire?”
In most cases the battery takes about 4 hours to fully charge. You will see the battery indicator appear full when the battery is charged.

I was wondering if the USB for the kindle fire charges it when its plugged in? :/ I can’t find the charger that goes in the wall…

I often don’t carry my outlet charger with me, and prefer to charge my Kindle Fire through a micro USB cable connected to my computer. I’ve discovered that if the Fire is past the unlock screen, it connects to the computer as an external flash drive, but it doesn’t seem to charge in this state. If I connect to my computer but don’t go past the unlock screen, the computer doesn’t acknowledge it as a drive, and it seems to charge fine. This is just an observation on my part.

Okay this may seem basic but I’m really new to this device…does the kindle fire have to be on to receive the charge? I used it for the first time until the battery died and then I plugged it in. The light did turn orange and then my kindle powered back on. I turned it off but then the charging light went off as well. I know they say most devices are “smart charged” now but I just don’t want to screw up the battery at all. And I must say i’m really impressed with how long the initial charge was.

to answer the question a few lines above, yes you can plug the kindle fire into a mac to charge.. I’ve done it on several occasions. However, this little heathen is about to be sent back to amazon because it will not charge via mac, via car, or via wall. I did everything in the forums, hold power for 30 seconds, and still no workie. The device has been ranging from 8-12% charge for two days now. It tricked me last night into thinking it was charging, green light in the battery spot and all. However, when I woke this morning it was at 10%.
***Revolation! 🙂 I turned off my wireless and it’s seemingly charging!! HOLY CRAPOLA (extended excitement here because a lot of my thesis books are on this kid.. papers need to be written and books need to be read) Hopefully this green motion of charge in the top right corner isn’t tricking me like it did last night.

I have a kindle fire since December 2011. Had no problems with it except for the length of the battery life, which appears to be normal. However, last month (April, 2012) I noticed that my charging light (orange) is on but the kindle fire is not charging. I thought there was a short in the cord but I now believe that the charging Port may be damaged or slack). How can I get this fixed.

I just bought a kindle fire from america ( I live in australia ) and the power socket doesn’t go into the wall. I have a micro USB that I stole from a hard drive, will it charge on the computer? The instructions says it will never charge fully with the computer, and I never have it on for four hours straight.
Any ideas???
Ta 🙂

I have a Kindle Fire (1st generation), and I had charging problems, too. As above, it charges much better after turning WiFi off first. I have gone through several cords, however. It does seem that the micro usb end gets damaged easily, especially if you travel with it or move it around a lot. I just buy new cords. I bought one at a Dollar Store for $7, that fit into a wall socket, and it worked fine. The next time I needed one, all I could find that day was one with a standard USB plug on the other end; I just plugged it into the back of my PC, and the orange light came on fine. I am not sure what I did different this time, but when I plugged it in, the PC recognized it as hardware, so I had to touch “DISMISS” on the Kindle, when I got the notice on the Kindle that I could “now download from PC via USB.” Obviously, I am not a “techie,” and had to figure this out, but it works!!

Fire charging solved. After getting kindle fire for kids xmas, we find the above charging problems. Did some net research and found – Amazon used the same charging method as it did with all its kindles. Works for crap on Fire HD. The Fire HD needs at least 2Amps output to charge and play at same time. It only charges in sleep mode with computer because the USB port doesn’t put out enough Amps. The wall plug the Fire comes with is 1Amp. 1Amp output will only charge the Fire in sleep mode as the Fire needs more juice to run apps or play and charge at the same time. Run to Radio Shack or Best Buy (or Amazon, who knew better and now offer the “Fast Charge” with 2.8Amps output fer about 20 bucks) and buy a wall or car plug with a minimum of 10Watts and 2Amps output. Solved problem. Kids can now play, watch movies, keep wifi on, and charge at same time. Mind that, Amazon did know this when releasing the fire but wanted to keep price under $200 so they just left us buyers hoping our Fire would charge overnight, with wifi off, and if the moons were all alinged correctly – (but!) Amazon does sell the amazing “Fire Fast Charger” – which is merely a plug with a 2.8Amp output. Here’s an idea – “Amazon! Just put the right plug for an HD device that needs more Amps and charge us the extra 20 bucks.” Lameo.

@Pam at the top of you screen there is a ‘pull down menu’ pull down and tap on wireless and that’s how you turn WiFi off.
I bought my son a kindle fire for Christmas. For some reason, I cannot charge kindle and use it at the same time. Have to ‘lock screen’ to get orange indicator charging light to come in. I’m new to the technology and our first tablet/kindle. Is the charging issue normal?

hi guys, the power in my kindle fire was drained out then i started to charge it i saw a lightning symbol below the batery pic what does the lightning symbol mean????????? does it mean charging…..

I just bought a used Kindle Fire (1st generation) off of Craigslist. After using it all of yesterday and draining the battery to less than 10% I put the wall charger in and let it charge. 4 hours later it was at 21%. When I woke up this morning it was still at 61% and something didn’t seem right.
I found this website and read the comments which were helpful. I used my wall charger from my smartphone and the Kindle Fire charged up to 100% in less than an hour. Apparently the wall chargger plug doesn’t always connect properly and maintain the charge plus I had to turn off WiFi.

@nursing your recommendation worked perfectly. My ANDROID smartphone charger works great for my kindle fire.

Well coming here I see many of us have the exact same problem. That makes me think that Amazon better do some homework. I have had my KF for one year and 4 months. It was a gift, I just love it, now I can’t seem to also charge it like I use to, HELLO LIKE ALL THE BOARD. Sometimes I think the posters are smarter then the people who built it. I bought a Griffin Adapter with a USB attachment that the guy said would work on the KF. My KF one is junk with a big J and I get a very snail sloooooooooooooooooow charge. This is a hugh problem and I think Amazon would be very wise to fix it. My warranty was over, and someone else bought it for me, so they won’t just replace it, which they should, if all of them are like this, and they said I could upgrade and sent me a whole list of different KF a bit cheaper and you have to put out money. Beware, I’m just saying, no warranty, no free replacement.
Lynne says
WELL TYBO YOU ARE THE GREAT PERSON!
I tried what you said turning off the WiFi, and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy, I hope you read this. People do not give up, read and read and read and soon you’ll find the answer.
I turned off the WiFi on the Kindle Fire on the top.
Plugged in a Griffin Adapter bought at Walmart 20.00
Turned it on made sure a orange lite stayed on and Boom Charging, this is on a year and almost a half KF. Good Luck!
Lynne says
PS. By the way if the orange lite goes off, don’t give up, unplug it, and wait a few seconds try and try again. Even green, anything. Good luck, don’t touch it let it charge all night then in the morning I had 100 % . Tybo, many Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The generous length of cord and special blue tubing used on the airtube headset gives people the opportunity to combat radiation
by moving cell phones further away from the body.
The mechanism is very clear: charged particles or photons
of sufficient energy shred cellular tissue by kicking electrons out
of molecules. I aimed a canister of mace at his
head, and he aimed his can at mine.

I am another whose kindle fire would not hold a charge. Bought the charger online from amazon, but it would not charge it. Even said NOT CHARGING. So after reading all these posts plugged in my android charger and there it goes amber light on. How long will it stay charged. Can you use it while charging? Well when it was plugged in before, no cause it wasn’t really charging. So we will see. Have had this for only a week, but tired of not being able to use it. Due to lack of charging!!! Shouldn’t be so difficult!!!

I see questions from far back that hopefully you have found answers to. I see many of the same in several months maybe this can assist someone. This is my second kindle. The first ones charging port was bent or something and it would not take a charge plug on its socket anymore. It was still under warrenty so I got a new free one from Amazon. GREAT CUSTOMER SERV/ICE. This happened because my plug got bent and I had to fidget it to get a connection. That only lasted a while. Then it went out for good. I believe it was due to using the device while charging. The charger I got with this one has a VERY LONG cord. It is a plug cord. I have other cords that I can use to charge on my computer but rarely do I do that. Basically if you have your drevice set to make a sound upon connection to charge and when not you are plugged in. It also sounds or vibrates depnding on your settings. That way you don’t have to depend only or have to look at the green/yellow indicator light near charge port. The other thing I would say is sometimes it a hard reset is needed to get the charge to show it is actuallly charging. No biggie that is easy enough to do.
I hope this helps those that had questions to uthis regard.
