The way you charge the PS3 controller is a bit weird to me. When I first bought my Playstation 3 I thought I would be able to charge my PS3 controller while the machine was off, that was a mistake because the next time I tried using the controller the battery was still at the same low level.
This makes absolutely no sense to me why would I charge my controller while my PS3 is on and I’m playing around with the machine, wouldn’t it make more sense if I could plug my controller into the PS3 while I’m not using it, so that the next time I do want to use the controller it would be fully charged and ready to go. And the usb cord they give you is so short I have to sit like two feet in front of the TV while I’m playing games because I’m charging the PS3 controller.
Ok, enough ranting. To charge your PS3 controller your PS3 will have to be on. Plug the controller into the usb port with the usb cord that came with the machine. When it’s charging the little red light on the controller will be flashing. Charging takes a couple of hours to fully charge.
You can also use other devices for charging the controller as well such as a computer, cable boxes with usb ports, and other types of charging devices that has a usb port.
Rich H says
I completely agree with you, it does seem a bit strange. I like to find out the ins and outs of a ‘new toy’ by playing with it rather than reading the manual, to start with anyway. I thought it would have been logical for the controller to be able to be charged while the PS3 was in standby (red light). I tried it and like you found it doesn’t work, this is obviously because the USB ports are inactive until the PS3 is on (green light). I think the best solution is to use your PC.
T.M says
Yeah I use my computer too, I’ll probably end up buying a longer usb cord so I can charge the controller while playing. The charging cord that comes with the PS3 is ridiculous.
Frank says
Yeah, and that ethernet cable too…3 ft!? Sony is funny.
digits says
You think only 5v is required. I purchased an externally powered USB hub today for sole purpose as to charge my Wii & PS3 controllers… Negatory, I was able to charge the Wii via the USB hub however the PS3 controllers would not. On my PC they (being PS3 controllers) would only charge if the drivers (USB human interface…) were installed, ie: motorola cellular phones w/ mini USB.
Now I have return the USB hub for longer USB cords….
Raj says
You can do it with iPhone, or iPhone charger…
graham says
lol no frank, sonny is just cheap
Engineer says
USB chargers such as those made for cell phones, including the iphone will NOT work.
The PS3 joystick must acknowledge a connection to a USB source, such as a PC/cable box/PS3 etc. A simple USB power supply will not work.
In order to charge the joystick the joystick and USB port must be able to communicate with each other.
So even if you buy a charging station the USB cord must be connected to a “intelligent” USB source.
Why did Sony do this? I imagine they Sony doesn’t want the joysticks to be plugged into any power source which may shorten the expected life span of the joystick.
I bought a dual charging station and plugged it into my cable dvr’s usb hard drive port.
I leave my dvr on 24/7 so it works great.
Engineer says
@graham
sony cheap?
they give their stuff away.
HUGE contributor of electronics to European countries that cannt afford it, especially to muscians.
the ps3 costs over $800 to make, they sell it for under $500.
american parents complained their kids got muscle strain from playing too much, and formed a class action suit against sony using shameless lawyers. sony gave them free gloves that help prevent strain.
last year sony made less then 2% profit.
i thank god there are companies like sony.
god knows if countries like france were dominating the high tech industry a tv would cost as much as a car.

Ps3 has such a small USB cord it sucks im like sitting so close to the tv ๐

Sid says
If the battery is built in do you have to buy a new controller when it dies? as that would work out very expensive.
Az says
I was going to ask when your charging the ps3 controller does it always flash it does it flash due to it charging whilst in process?
ED says
The Playstation 3 is an amazing gaming system. It blows the xbox 360 out of the water with all of it’s great features. The USB cord may be a little short, but for $299 you cant beat this system. It is a fully functional media center in a box. Sony made a winner. I LOVE MY PS3!!!!!!!!!!
TA says
Oh would you kids stop crying and just connect the dam controller to a computer and let it charge, by the way I am loyal to sony products, I love my PS3
Miles says
You can also use the USB chord that came with the psp.
Kevin says
you can use ANY usb cord, those things cost practically nothing so if you like you can buy one that’s up to 30 metres long so to speak, and connect that to your ps3, you’ll still be able to walk to your neighbour across the street holding your controller ๐
Steve says
Kevin, USB doesn’t work over 5m unless you use powered extendors.
demetrius hayes says
can I charge my PSP to my PS3?

itsnot that bad that the usb fr charging ps3 controllers is short, geesh stop complaining. ps3 is awesome so one flaw to an already amazing system is nothing. SONY ROCKS!!! ๐
iAAPL says
Oh, the charging system with the PS3 controller really sucks. The only thing worse would be if you had to go out and buy a pack of AA batteries every couple days. Oh wait, isn’t that how the 360 works?

BIGGESTBOSS! says
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE PS3
Rahim says
DUDE!! it seems to me that you didn’t understand, the idea of charging the ps3 joystick, I believe it’s the best compared to other consoles like xbox, when you get that heavy and bulky joystick, that has 2 battery slots behind, you do need to have the ps3 on, so you can charge it for a while, than you can unplug your joystick and play cordless for hours, you can charge your joystick from your laptop or PC, you just need to plug it.
shaun says
just brought ps3, doing initial set-up, nothing is happening, i’ve done what the manual is telling me to do. what’s wrong ?
Capt'n Obvious says
Lol yeah while we’re at it, why can’t we charge our Ipods without turning on our computer, why can’t we charge our phones without turning on the wallsocket.
Damn son
You can still play your damn ps3 while the controllers are charging. The power lead and HDMI cables are long enough for you to place the ps3 coloser to you.
Shaggymook says
I have a PS3 and an Xbox 360. I have to say the Xbox play and charge kit is a Whole lot better for me (You don’t have to buy AA batteries). I can charge my controllers any where and when you charge it on the Xbox the machine shuts off when it’s done charging, I wish the PS3 did this. Hope this doesn’t set off the fanboys because I really like Both systems I just don’t like leave the PS3 on.
Lol at fanboys says
PS3 fanboys make me chuckle. The PS3 is an inferior platform for gaming compared to the 360s hardware and it shows in every cross-platform title. It’s a blu-ray player that was disguised as a console with minimum effort. The 360 is a gaming platform first and foremost and HD movie player (with upscaling on ALL models) second. Oh and what price did your glorified blu-ray player get released at? Ridiculous…
db says
The ps3 has a shutdown timer in the system properties. Just set it to turn off 1 or two hours later while leaving the controler plugged in. No more problems.
Russ says
Lol at fanboys….Why are you so bitter and angry? It’s a damn game. Relax.
Ace says
All ya dumb ppl who said that the Xbox 360 you have to buy a AA battery all the time are just dumb!!….Cuz they have the rechargeable batteries and the USB which also when they sell a controller it comes with a USB not like the ps3 that they just give you the controller…I have both systems and say that I like them both!!….
matt says
I got both and they are both good for different reasons.
If you have the play and charge kit for 360 you can hook it up to the 360 and turn off the 360 using the pad and it will charge it in standby mode. THE AWESOME THING IS THAT YOU CAN ALSO CHARGE THE PS3 CONTROLLER WITH THE 360 AT THE SAME TIME, AND THE 360 WILL GO OFF AUTOMATICALLY after the 360 Pad is charged. Thought it was cool to charge my ps3 pad like this since the ps3 needs to be on, I can charge them at the same time.
Pretty helpful if you got both. I havent tried charging my 360 pad from the ps3 yet…..
Devin says
A LOT I CAN FINALLY PLAY IT AGAIN
Tyler says
you big babies i have had my ps3 for a year now and i havent any problems with it unlike my xbox it makes well 2 much noise and it cost 2 much to get rid of the red ring of death which comes back in a week PS3 ALL THE WAY !
The Chair says
It’s not that this problem is very significant, it’s the fact that this problem is part of a larger group of problems that makes the PS3 experience inferior to other multimedia devices.
When you think of this charging problem for someone who uses their PS3 mostly to watch Blu-Ray or DVD movies, it becomes a pain for someone who does not own the remote control since the comtroller’s battery is drained even when idle.
Other problems with the general PS3 experience include long downloading and installation times (including ridiculously huge game patches), the inability to do anything else while downloading and installing something, a Blu-ray drive that is slower when compared to 360’s DVD drive, and an OS that is virtually unreadable to someone with an SDTV.
These are all problems that are not present on 360.
ffmaniac says
I agree that it is quite gay the controller does not charge while the ps is off, but its not a big deal since i can use my puter to charge it. As far as the 360 is concerned, only an ignorant person buys regular batteries anymore. rechargeable all the way! ๐
Ah the battle of the consoles. which one is better? answer: its a tie.
It all comes down to which console has the games you want to play.

PS3SLIM says
guys you have the older ps3 with ps3 slim you can charge it while its off its so great but i heard about this before i got ps3 slim so i ended up getting two controllers but its still great for if i forget to charge. But still mostly xbox and ps3 are tied. ps3 just has first person shooters and kid games. xbox has mainly just sport games and shooters which really sucks and little big planet IS ALL THAT thats like the best game ever
Zack says
I just bought mine off of ebay for 70 dollars brand new now i got to wait freaking 2 to 3 weeks before I can play which totally sucks i couldve got a xbox 360 or a wii cus i had the money but i wanted a freaking ps3 so blah but luckily for my brothers they both bought theirs a few months back but neither have internet so i get to play with them while i hook them up to the net so what if the freaking usb cord is 2 inches long at least your lucky enough to have a ps3 .
bg says
at least i’m not only one having the charging prob. seems like no matter how long the controller is supposedly charging the damn thing never gets enough juice. i’m returning it if it cannot be fixed. why wait 2 hours when you wanna play now. lame
Chase says
@the chair
The new slim ps3 turns the controller off after 10 mins of idle. If all you do watch movies on the ps3 then your controller will stay charged for a least a month.
Most people have 2 controllers anyway charge one, while using the other.
I have a Fat and Slim Ps3. I cannot attest to the slim charging while the ps3 slim is powered off. I didn’t think that it would charge when off. I will try it though.
PS3 rules the world.
As for software patches, they now have an automatic patch download.
Right now you have to purchase the Plus package.
It downloads your game and system updates at a time of your choosing. It will automatically turn the ps3 on at your selected time and download any available update. Then turn off.
Pretty cool addition
As for SDTV PS3 owners. They don’t really exist. I don’t think people purchase a $300 system without purchasing at least, a low end 1080p lcd tv for sub $200. I can attest to this I purchased at 24 inch lcd 1080p from best buy $180 4 the bedroom it works awesome with my second ps3

I like to use a 3rd party USB wall charger. You can get the nice little docks but they are pretty pricy for what they do and might not accomodate all types of controllers now that Move and the side nub are out.
What I’d really like is a wall charger with 3 or 4 short mini-USB’s off of it.
Kyle says
Quite crying both great both few minor problems nothing that can’t be fixed as for the charging there are so many ways to solve this problem u have computer charging dock charge ps3charge etc.. .ps3 and xbox… Which shall be dominate neither they tied I have to give ps3 the grAphics and xbox game play but both R dependent on what u want to do lol as so many people have said so far.

^Thats what a sucker does.. if i pay for a playstation that comes with a controller already.. why the @!#@ would i have to by another controller just to have one fully charged to play. Thats ridiculous. They should make it much easier to charge instead of trying to sucker people into spending more money.. what if i do have 2 controllers and 2 people wanna play? should i get a third ? should i get like 100 controllers just in case ?? lol

Thanks for sharing this – I bought the ps3 when it first came out. I couldn’t work out for the life of me why my controller wouldn’t charge. I ordered a second controller because I thought it was a fault with the first, but when I had the same problem, I simply stopped using this ยฃ400 machine I bought. Until now… Months latter & they’ve devalued no end!
I feel very stupid now, after charging the controls via the usb port… Why on earth didn’t I think of this earlier! Well, I’m actually quite glad it didn’t sell on ebay as I had hoped. What a pain in the Ar*e !

Hello!
Just plug your PS3 Controller into another operating electronic device such as a Computer or the PS3 itself, and it will automatically charge and that’s it! It may differ with the “No Name” controllers like Madcatz, but, I know for a fact the regular PS3 controllers will charge by plugging them in with a USB cord.
PS3 Support says
Hello!
The one and only suggestion is that you get a USB adapter from the local store.Doesn’t cost much,And also you can charge you controller using any switch board.I really recommend buying that ^^

Its a pnp (plug and play item) just hook it up to the usb port on the front of your computer(with the same cable you’d hook it to the ps3) while you complain on here..then two hours from now you’ll have a fully charged controller…it was clearly stated in this article… i havent tried the cable box one with my direct tv tho.. or on my tvs powered usb port..

simple way and will cost you around ยฃ2.50 GBP / aprox $5 US from any pc shop or even supermarkets sometimes stock them.
all you need to do is get a extension for the usb lead you can pic up usb plug to usb soket leads from abought 1 ft long upto 20ft long.
all you do wiht this is plug the extension into the console and then the sony lead into the sokect of the consle and then atach the controler to the sony lead ๐
sadly the sony leads are a difrent conector to the controler so thease are much harder to find other then short ones from sony directly
i recomend getting a 2m aprox 8ft as with the included ps3 suplied lead this will easily give you 10 ft of lead to play with. the joy with this is while playing your controler is also chraging and i find 1h of gameply with the lead conected will boost my controler charge for around 4h constant play afterwards and if it gets low pop the lead back in and problem solved.
the other simple way to keep the controler charged is to atach it to the usb ports that are on some types of TV. but if you realy want to play 100% wierless all the time then you will need to use a doking station while not playing.
the third and final option i have not tried it myself but i beleive that u can set the ps3 consle to power off after so long ie 30mins 1h 2+ of not being used so you can play for a hour or two then simply end the game and conect the contorler to the console it will give the contorler charge then power of the consle automaticly after the desierd time.
hope this helps

guys, use common sense here. the PS3 controller is the best. the reason it doesnt charge when the console is off is because THE CONSOLE DOESN’T DRAW ENERGY WHEN IT’S OFF. the only energy goes toward the red light. its this new thing called conserving energy, you should all get into it. Jeez… if Xbox or Wii had rechargeable controllers (which they don’t, which is low) the same exact thing would happen, guarantee it. if youre really too lazy to carry the controller to your computer or other USB device, buy a freaking cable that goes from wall jack to usb port or something. common sense people.
tj says
da new updated system wont charge at all
Jonna says
The wii DOES have rechargeable batteries that comes with a station. but it does use up alot of energy. the ps3 is just about the best system to date and they are already cooking up plans for a ps4. just plug it in to your phone charger or computer and stop complaining. this is a great system. how could you say psn sucks? do you prefer xbox live that costs money to use? be grateful people. your getting mad over controllers. your just too lazy to find solutions yourself, so you go on the internet and whine. grow up.
EnvyEyes says
Should we really be a all surprised with Sony’s arse backwards way of going about charging one simple controller.
This is the same company that thinks UNDERSCORES are cool in PSN ScreenNames instead of just using SPACES.
They seem to make things more difficult than they have to be in order to further infuriate the small userbase they might still have.
Example Numero Uno. The Huge Hacking Debaucle. All they had to do was update their security to something that at least resembled something from the year 2011, but instead they maintained that arrogant nature that has been the downfall of the PS3 since launch and made things all the more difficult for themselves as they have been all generation and as a result, thousands of PSN users (because that’s all there are of them) identities were stolen.
Sony knows we’ve had enough and are suffering for it.
As a result, there will not be a Playstation 4 thank god.
You’re all invited to Sony’s pity party though. I’m going just to point, taunt and laugh and shake the ground and watch them plummet between the cracks of yet another earthquake.
bayanda says

people that are bitching are retarded. are you that spoiled that one tiny issue would make you flip out against the entire product?? the ps3 isn’t gonna burn out when it’s sitting there idle charging a controller. way to have a 1980’s mindset on technology. furthermore, omg newsflash, the controller will charge while it’s plugged into the system and you’re playing it. holy crap! lmao this system is great and you idiots need to use a little bit of common sense and realize this isn’t even an issue. it’s a mechanic that you are all too stupid/spoiled to deal with and therefore you think it’s an issue. get an education before a game system next time you want to spend money.
Frank says
Just thought I’d chime in here are some people here are really lost. Most computers now days do have USB ports that provide power while off. The Xbox 360 powers the play & charge kit while it is off, consuming only the power needed to charge the controller. You don’t have to charge your controller on your ps3 you can use any dang usb port you want, anywhere. You don’t even have to use the cable that comes with it. Any USB->mini USB cable will work just fine. You can get an adapter to plug a USB cable right into a wall outlet if you want for less than $5 US.

Sheesh people way to hate on Sony . I bought the damn charging station and I happen to love it . Works well for me . I’ve never not once charged my controller through the PS3 itself. The battery life last forever . I sometimes sit and play for 8 hours or so . I only have to charge it like every other week . Bite the bullet and by the docking station and quit being whine ass about inconsequential crap. By the way my docking station is DreamGear and cost a whole 25 dollars…. and only takes an hour to charge with every device on it . Get a grip and bone up some dollars !

Ok i just tested this and pay attention i just tried to use my samsung galaxy tab 10.1 USB wall charger to charge my PS3 dual shock 3 controller that came with my PS3 and it did nothing. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/ETA-P10JBEGSTA?from_mobile=true I also tried another USB wall charger I had and that also did nothing. So, i plugged the USB plug the one that came with my PS3 and plugged the USB into my tv’s USB slot and it is now charging my PS3 controller. How do i know its charging because all 4 red dots are blinking on my controller. At least i am pretty sure that’s what all 4 blinking lights simultaneously on mean. Once there is only 1 red dot blinking i am also pretty sure that means it is fully charged. Can someone confirm my blinking dot theory. Is there a menu or something to see how much juice your PS3 dual shock 3 controller has (im talking about the PS3 controller that came inside the box when i bought it). Hope this helps out the majority of everyones questions.

We have an adapter that has USB capability, and you just plug it into the wall outlet. I personally find it annoying that the controller doesn’t charge when the ps3 is off, but appreciate that it doesn’t draw unwanted energy. Just got our system today and hope that it’s worth the $$$$.

Its a bummer you cannot charge the ps3 controller via the console when its on standby. For the first time I charged it fully was yesterday via the pc in standby mode. Notice all four lights lit and started to blink. The blinking stopped just under 2yrs and that is when I disconnected the controller knowing its fully charged.

This is great!!!!11 I went through 3 PS3’s thinking they were all faulty as they wouldn’t charge the controller overnight and now I discover the stupid machine has to be turned on! That’s just crazy right there. Well, at least I have a PS3 in every room now.

Glad I found this. What a dumb way to design the system. oh well. A friends old one has a I/O power switch on the back of the unit. If he leaves that on, then he can charge controllers. Guess they have to cheapen everything up.
Rokuken says
Well, I have a suggestion. If you have any AC adapter that accepts USB, just plug it in and press the middle button. If all 4 lights are flashing, it means that it’s charging.
Rokuken says
BTW, for those who doesn’t know how to verify how much charge your ps3 controller has, here’s how. At the menu or while playing a game, just press and hold the middle button on your controller. It’ll show how much juice it has at the bottom left corner. I’ve only had my ps3 for about a week now and I figure all this out by myself. You just have to mess with the buttons a little.
Proxi says
Hey people, just stop bitching about Sony and the evil conspiracy. All PS3 controllers, including the “move” ones can be charged from ANY of the two USB sources:
1. Active (powered up) PC or PS3
2. Sony’s charging adapter (charging dock).
Go to eBay and buy one for under $10. With such an adapter you can charge all your controllers while your PC or PS are off.

I charged my ps3 bluetooth headset today via powered usb hub and the mute button was flashing red like normal every few seconds but it wouldnt stop flashing after like 4 hours of charging i knew it was fully charged because it takes usually only 3 hours to charge from a low battery state…anyway the flashing was different because it stayed solid red for a few seconds and then would start flashing again it kept on doing this so i figure that if u charge via powered usb hub, the red light has to stay solid for at least a few seconds then you know its fully charged havent tried charging my controller this way yet because it still has 3 bars left so im trying that next when that goes on low battery hope it works like normal where the red lights all shut off when fully charged man why they gotta make ps3 so gay like that i dunno nobody knows

Would it be better if I bought a new ps3or refurbished?

I have a USB port that goes into a wall outlet so you plug it to that and it will always charge. I do it overnight

I was wondering why I wasn’t getting any response from it when I was trying to charge it. My cell phone uses a Mini-USB charger too, but it didn’t respond to that.
Plugging it into my computer’s USB port worked.
Ironically enough, the PS3 Blu-ray remote uses standard batteries, so I can just throw some eneloops in there just like the Xbox and Wii controllers.
And here I thought universal USB chargers were goign to make my life simpler…

I would just like to say, that I came to this article because I was having a debate with a friend about whether or not the controller would charge when the system was off, and wanted to prove a point.
Much to my pleasure we got HUGE amusement out of all your hilarious comments!!! hahahahahaha dicks.

Thanks for this article.
Clear and to the point…answered the questions I couldn’t find anywhere else. Namely, “Does the PS3 have to be on when charging”. Thanks again. Most appreciated.

trying to charge controllers using the playstation3 system

It might make more sense for the controller to charge while the system is off, but it’s actually a limitation of the USB port; when the system is off, the USB port is not receiving power, either. You wouldn’t be able to charge the controller if it was plugged into your turned-off laptop, either.
Which is why what would make MORE is if Sony had provided a USB wall wart with the system and the controller. Then the USB port could be used for pairing the controller and the system, and the same cable could be used for charging while the system was shut down.

does the controller have to be on aswell.
have not worked that out yet.

i think the better ?tion is which is FASTER. a usb to wall charger or the sony ps3 controller charging ‘hub’ [which also plugs to wall]

what kind of moron would come to the conclusion
that a system with NO power i.e off would charge a controller up?
at most you’d find it annoying to turn on an entire system
to charge a controller, but seriously what ‘TARD would think “geez i cant wait to charge my controller while the system is OFF and has NO power coming out let alone powet going to the controller

Actually, there is this thing called “sleep-and-charge USB ports”. Here’s the description from Wikipedia: “Sleep-and-charge USB ports can be used to charge electronic devices even when the computer is switched off. Normally when a computer is powered off the USB ports are powered down. This prevents phones and other devices from being able to charge unless the computer is powered on. Sleep-and-charge USB ports remain powered even when the computer is off. On laptops, charging devices from the USB port when it is not being powered from AC drains the laptop battery faster. Desktop machines need to remain plugged into AC power for Sleep-and-charge to work. These ports are found colored differently (mostly red and yellow).”
I’ll leave it to the reader to decide who the moron is.

Regarding: “theONE”
King Dom has exposed the moron, Most devices do not completely power off but sleep or hibernate. theOne must not know how devices can draw constant power and not be “on”.
Hook and amp meter in series and see for your self, switch mode power supplies can reduce power output and can still supply power to key areas on the circuit board.
This is basic electronics. Volts x Amps = power in watts.
all that is needed power wise is ~5 volts@1000ma per port ~
BTW: I can charge with the computer off (enabled in bios for USB power) I charge controllers with the DirecTv sat dish box and it is “off “also. Therefore, the aforementioned “theOne” is regurgitating some psycho-babble B.S. and is not educated in this area and should not be insulting the intelligence of others. I do question the logic of Sony’s engineering dept. As others have stated that the “logical solution” would be to have the usb ports fully active for recharging while the unit is “off” and as the current level drops and the controller is charged fully then have the power reduced and go into a sleep mode. No need for a secondary power supply, one already exist in the chassis. A comment to ” Varika” there is no need for or would I want additional power leaches driving up electric bill and more garbage to mess with. King Dom is correct and I agree with the comment
Iโll leave it to the reader to decide who the moron is.
