“I’m going to pick up a iPod touch some time next week. Do apps and games for the iPhone work on the iPod touch as well?”
Almost every game or app for the iPhone will work on the iPod touch. But there are some exceptions because the iPod touch does not have a built-in microphone that a some apps may need to work properly.
For example the latest iPhone/iPod touch 3.0 firmware included a voice memo app which iPod touch users couldn’t use unless they plugged in an external mic. Or a popular app like Shazam will not work on the iPod touch unless a external mic is plugged in.
There are also some apps that may require you to have wireless access like the popular restaurant guide app “Urban Spoon”. Any GPS related applications will probably need Wifi in order to work.
When you’re in iTunes and inside the App Store select the app you want to download either by doing a search or browsing through the popular sections. Click on the app name to pull up more info.
Now you should be at the app description page. On the right hand side of the page will be the “Application Description”. Here you will find exactly what the app is about and what it can do. Look near the bottom for the “Requirements”, this is where you can see if that specific app will work for the iPod touch. Some requirements may include a second generation iPod touch, and firmware requirements.
These are the the requirements for this app that I pulled up:
For the most part any app that can run on the iPhone will also run on the iPod touch without any problems but you may need to upgrade the firmware for more compatibility with newer apps. Have fun with your new toy.
