“Is there a way to play PS3 games on the PS4?”
Okay, so i get asked this question a lot. Can the Ps4 play PS3 games? Technically the answer is no. No, because physical PS3 disc that you own will not work on the Ps4. If you’ve ever tried popping a PS3 game into the PS4 it will give you a message that the disc is no compatible.
People at Sony have said it was too complex because the PS3 and PS4 are using different architecture. But they never said it was impossible, if Sony dumps enough money and resources into backwards compatibly anything is possible. Just don’t hold your breath.
There is a bit of workaround if you really want to play some of those old PS3 games. Its called Playstation Now. It’s Sony’s streaming digital gaming service. Kinda like Netfilx for games. You can pay a subscription fee to access all the games or you can rent a game for a certain amount of time. The subscription fee is about 20 bucks a month or 45 bucks for three months. There is also free trial so you can try the service before paying.
You’ll need to have a solid internet connection if you want to play games uninterrupted and without lag. Sony recommends about 5Mbps connection speed but 10 or more would be optimal. And of course it’s always a good idea to use an ethernet cable connected to the PS4 instead of using Wifi.
So what are your options for playing PS3 games on the PS4:
1. Keep your PS3 and all the games you’ve purchased over the years and keep playing them that way. Easy right.
2. Join Playstation Now. This is Sony’s answer to backwards compatibility. With Playstation Now you can stream hundreds of PS3 games to the PS4. This service will set you back about 20 bucks a month.
So what do you guys think? Should Sony be doing more to offer backwards compatibility? Or you don’t really care because you’d rather be playing new games anyways.
