What is hdtv

January 26, 2008

What is hdtv? Hdtv stands for high definition television, hdtv came out in the 90’s by a group of tv companies called Digital HDTV Grand Alliance. Hdtv offers better picture quality and higher resolution than the standard television because it’s digital.

So let’s go through some basic features of hdtv and why it’s so cool. First thing about hdtv’s are they all have wide screen often call sixteen by nine (16:9) that’s the aspect ratio which give you the theater like experience. The most popular hdtv’s are lcd’s and plasma’s because they are very thin and sexy and most are wall mountable. Prices on hdtv’s are dropping every year so that makes it more affordable for many people.

To watch high definition tv you will need high definition content. There are several ways to get hd content, your local cable company will sell some type of hd set top box, satellite companies also offer hd boxes, and to watch hi-def movies you can purchase a Blu-Ray dvd player or a HD DVD player, these are two different formats here so if you buy a HD-DVD player you can only play HD-DVD movies and the same goes for Blu-Ray. If I was looking to buy a high def dvd player I would by a Playstion 3 because the PS3 can play the Blu-Ray disc format and you will be able to update the firmware which is very important, it’s one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players on the market right now, and it can play high def PS3 games. Why would I choose Blu-Ray over HD-DVD you ask? Blu-Ray has 70 percent of the movies on the market as of today and HD-DVD looks like it may be losing the war, chances are you will have more movies you want on the Blu-ray side.
