Virus pop up warning
April 15, 2008
I keep getting a virus warning pop up on my computer that tells me I have a virus. Every time I click it tells me to buy some anti-virus program to get rid of the virus. I tried scanning my computer with AVG but that didn’t help. Please advise this is getting real annoying.
Ironically the virus popup warning is a virus, it sounds like you have a variant of the Smitfraud infection. Pay no attention those fake alert boxes coming from your system tray and NEVER buy anything from them they are scammers out to take your money.
As you already know most plain antivirus programs such as AVG will not remove this malware instead try this Smithfraud remover tool.
When you are finished using the SmithFraudFix to clean your computer of infections I would recommend using the free scanner from Ewido which is now called “AVG Anit-spyware” Don’t be confused by the name this is not the same as the AVG anti-virus. Use this free tool to scan your computer for any traces of infections.

Worked…I think. I’ll have to ask its users if it showed up again.
