Remove AVG Toolbar

August 2, 2008

During your installation of AVG Free 8 you will get the option to install the AVG Toolbar and by default it’s checked for installation. If you’re not careful and happened to miss that screen than you’ve probably installed the AVG Toolbar. You need to click the “Next” button so many times during the installation by the time you’ve reached the AVG Toolbar dialog box you just click “Next” without even reading what its doing, pretty clever indeed.

How to remove AVG Toolbar for Internet Explorer:

Right click anywhere on the Toolbar and uncheck “AVG Security Toolbar”.

Remove AVG Toobar for Firefox Users:

Go up to the Menu bar and click on “Tools -> Add-ons. Look for “AVG Security Toolbar” and click on the “Disable” button. Close the window and restart Firefox.

Just to point out that I installed AVG on multiple systems. I *always* untick the box when it pushes AVG “security” toolbar and AVG *always* installs it regardless.

I’d very much appreciate if we stopped telling users that they are careless when in truth all this “me, me, me” software forces unwanted registrations and advertising on users. Users are victims of bad practice, not responsible for it.

I just booted up an old system I had in the closet. I don’t remember installing AVG on this machine, but anyway, it’s there. I did the tools > options > and tried to remove it from there. It only gave me the disable option. I did a Revo Uninstall on this software, then when through Program Files, pulled it out of there. I restarted Firefox and AVG continues to hijack my homepage. I did a regedit and tried to get it that way. I did a find file, deleted all instances of it and even had to run fileassassin on some of the components of it. This to me seems to be highly malicious software that continues to reinstall itself. I’ve been pulling my hair out for almost 8 hours on this thing. Oh, one more thing. If I use any other search engine than avg, it comes up with a big block at the top of my screen that tells me my computer is infected with a virus.
