Remove AVG Toolbar

August 2, 2008

During your installation of AVG Free 8 you will get the option to install the AVG Toolbar and by default it’s checked for installation. If you’re not careful and happened to miss that screen than you’ve probably installed the AVG Toolbar. You need to click the “Next” button so many times during the installation by the time you’ve reached the AVG Toolbar dialog box you just click “Next” without even reading what its doing, pretty clever indeed.

How to remove AVG Toolbar for Internet Explorer:

Right click anywhere on the Toolbar and uncheck “AVG Security Toolbar”.

Remove AVG Toobar for Firefox Users:

Go up to the Menu bar and click on “Tools -> Add-ons. Look for “AVG Security Toolbar” and click on the “Disable” button. Close the window and restart Firefox.

what about when the right click options are all greyed out?

many thanks, worked immediately

Dan December 19, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Sorry, but your instructions for Firefox didn’t work. Tools>add-ons does not yield a list that includes AVG, nor is there any disable button. What did I miss in those thrre step directions?

shaun December 22, 2008 at 6:18 am

Hi, I removed the tool bar, but would like an easy fix soloution to remove the flipping content of searches, nothing to hide, simply dont like clutter.
shaun.

Ron February 9, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Un-checking a toolbar in IE does not remove them, it simply hides them. Would be better if the instructions actually told you how to remove them since they are still running in the background doing their annoying things.

derm April 11, 2009 at 7:15 am

The title was kinda misleading. I was interested in removing it, not just hiding it.

Russ April 27, 2009 at 9:28 am

Just like the AVG FAQ’s this tells you how to turn it off but not REMOVE or UNINSTALL it.

Dell May 10, 2009 at 6:38 am

REMOVE AVG TOOLBAR.
Run installation again and uncheck toolbar install page.

Bearmon June 10, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Thanks. It works!

Devorah June 11, 2009 at 2:54 am

Thank you – Plain and Simple! A shame that AVG (or Yahoo) don’t provide the instructions themselves…

Jim June 11, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I installed AVG (never again) and did not check the box. I was very mindful to do so, yet still got the freakin’ toolbar. So I installed AVG AGAIN with the sole purpose to uncheck the box, which I did and still got the toolbar. After sending an obscene email to support@avg.com, I read about your solution and it worked. Thank you very much.

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! I will add as a sidenote, I ensured on my laptop to NOT check adding the toolbar because I have hated it being on my desktop. It still added it. Although I feel silly to have never thought about trying to right click on it, I must say it is wonderfully refreshing to finally be able to make it go away!!! Thanks!

inge June 15, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Thanks, my eyes see a larger horizon.

David Park June 24, 2009 at 2:40 am

Erm.. when I right click the toolbar the dropdown menu does not include ‘AVG security toolbar’, so I cannot uncheck it.

sandra June 27, 2009 at 10:41 am

Thanks it has hidden the toolbar. I like AVG used it for years I guess they are simply trying to earn some money.
It is a pain having so much stuff running on the pc I hate change. the internet was great 5 years ago, braodband started of good but now its being used to send so much junk we will all need bigger faster machines then more and more bandwidth to cope.

BJ July 21, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Right click on AVG tool bar, then toolbar otions and advanced options. uncheck these are one will make it reappear every week. Don;t know how to remove it though.

From the website of AVG itself:

1882:
How to uninstall AVG Security Toolbar

Please download the current installation file of AVG from the Download section of our website, and run it to start the installation process.
The installation process recognizes the existence of installed AVG and the Add/Remove Components, Repair installation and Uninstall options are offered.

* Please close your Internet browser.
* Choose the “Repair installation” option.
* On the next page uncheck the “Yes, I wish to install the AVG Security Toolbar” option.
* Finish the installation wizard and update AVG.

This way the AVG Security Toolbar will be permanently uninstalled from your computer.

Note: Uninstalling the AVG Security Toolbar has no negative effect on the level of security provided by LinkScanner component. The only consequence of missing toolbar is an absence of some of the options, and less verbose information about the threats found by the LinkScanner component. The main settings of the LinkScanner component can be still configured in AVG User Interface.

Good luck!

I too have happily used GRISOFT AVG FREE for years (my bro sells the commercial version to all his Business Clients) and have ALWAYS OPTED OUT on the install toolbar!!!

Dang SOB updater program allowed them to SNEAK it in on the AUTO UPDATE/install at shutdown.

Am trying the above techniques as I type…hope this works…NOW to fix the AUTO UPDATE thang!

MR HAPPY October 17, 2009 at 1:43 am

Thank you, is there anything more enoying than programs installing stuff that you don’t want? When will they learn that spamming people, doesnt work.

seasdasdasd November 9, 2009 at 4:50 am

I want to know how to UNINSTALL IT. Not “DISABLE” it. Just because I can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

John December 31, 2009 at 3:16 am

Thanks, nice easy removal.

Mary January 19, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Thank you so much! It was popping up every week or so, and no matter how much I uncliked it on the toolbars setting it still came back. Glad that it’s finally gone!

Mikkis January 21, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Thank you all for the advices!!!

Reggie March 8, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Thank you. What a sketchy deal – it installed without my permission… yuck.

inu March 14, 2010 at 7:21 pm

The topic should read “How to DISABLE” not “uninstall”. also, the directions provided for MSIE are not valid for all versions of MSIE/Windows.

Sam March 15, 2010 at 10:28 am

how do you hide the avg toolbar without uninstalling the program

Ena March 28, 2010 at 7:33 pm

Thank you for the quick, to-the-point, no-need-for-extra-software, no-need-to-be-a-rocket-scientist-specialist answer. Thanks!

Marie May 15, 2010 at 1:03 pm

This worked. I’m a Firefox user.
Thank-You so much for the info! This took me forever.
It was so quick, simple & easy. Excellent.

jen May 16, 2010 at 12:26 am

Judith, I can’t get that uninstall method to work to delete the damn search function. I’ve still got bastard avg all over my searches.

jen May 16, 2010 at 12:57 am

It’s left me with the yahoo search, and I don’t want this. How do I get rid of this?

Jane June 3, 2010 at 7:58 am

Yeah. Because when I uninstalled it, that is, when I went into “View” and unchecked AVG, to my surpriseALL the toolbars were disabled! I had to close the session of Firefox and start up again, close that again, start again, and enable everything. So I hope this one works – that is, going to “Tools” and just clicking “disable”.

mike August 11, 2010 at 3:14 am

Thanks. Just disabled Avg toolbar. Simple and easy.

Another “Settings” battle over and done with…

Sarah August 17, 2010 at 7:31 am

Turn off does not equall uninstall. How can I get rid of software I didn’t install, that my previous Antivirus [sic] installed?

Doh Virused by my antivirus software.

Keelback October 13, 2010 at 9:38 am

That doesn’t work in AVG 2011. No option to select for the toolbar. I have tried repair option and the configure option. It keep reappearing for me.

Mark October 19, 2010 at 8:49 pm

To remove the toolbar from AVG 2011:

Close your browsers.
Go to the c:\program files\avg\avg10 folder in windows explorer.
Rename the Toolbar folder to something else like Removed.
Restart your browser.
It shouldn’t come back unless you do a repair on the AVG install.

Sean November 27, 2010 at 1:26 pm

follow Marks removal for 2011 version, takes 230 seconds. Thanks Mark.

Thank you for the simple, no nonsense solution to my computer “issue” with the avg toolbar

Trina April 3, 2011 at 4:26 pm

I have tried every answer on the internet to remove this AVG Security Search from my PC. I installed AVG (I know use Avast) and uninstralled it..this did not work. I literraly spent hours last night alone. Today I turned on my computer and it was still there!! One of the suggestions had been to go into tools and go to manage add ons. In search provider…I had Bing, Google and AVG. I tried this several times but the AVG security search could not be deleted because the “remove button” stayed gray. Today, I tried something different (which may be obvious to o thers but not to me) I made Google my Default (AVG was the default) once I made this change the AVG “remove button” did not gray and I could remove it. It is whatever search engine is the default that cannot be deleted.

EMika May 18, 2011 at 6:11 am

how do i delete it off google chrome?

MLG July 20, 2011 at 6:59 am

Hey would you mind letting me know which hosting company you’re working with? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different internet browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker then most. Can you recommend a good hosting provider at a reasonable price? Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!

Sonya August 26, 2011 at 7:50 pm

The instructions for Firefox, removing toolbar worked great for me tonight. Thank you!

sam November 4, 2011 at 8:53 am
