PS3 Media Sharing
January 11, 2008
Wanna use your Playstation 3 as a media center? With a compatible UPnP media server you can share photos, music, and video files from your computer to your PS3.
These programs turn your computer into a media server to stream media to the PS3. From my brief experience (two days) they all work pretty good, although video playback is a bit trickier. The PS3 2.10 firmware currently does not play avi or divx formats.
Twonky Media - ps3 media sharing for Windows, Mac, Linux
TVersity - ps3 media server for Windows XP, 2000
MediaTomb - media server for Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X
If you don’t feel like downloading a third party program you can use Window Vista to stream media although I prefer the above programs. First install the latest Window Media Player when that’s all done. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. Now under Sharing and Discovery turn on Network Discovery and Media sharing. When turning on Media sharing make sure to turn on the PS3 so the computer can detect it, now in Media sharing press the “Change” button and you should see “Unknown Device” click on “Allow” to add the PS3. I hope I didn’t miss any steps, give it try and play around with the settings. When that’s all done go back to the PS3 and select “Search for Media Servers“.
From my personal experience the PS3 is not ready to be a true media center yet, not until Sony updates the firmware to support all the popular video formats such as avi and divx. Although streaming music to the PS3 works really well, so if all you wanna do is sit back and listen to mp3 audio these tools will work great.
