How to use Daemon Tools to open ISO

November 23, 2007

Yesterday I talked a little bit about how to open ISO files today I will show you how to mount an ISO file using Daemon Tools which is a free program. Please remember to uncheck the “Daemons Tools Search Bar” when installing the program for the first time, you do not want that adware garbage. Get the latest version here.

After installing Daemon Tools, open the program and you should see a little icon with a red lightning bolt on your system tray.
mount with daemon tools

  • Right click on that icon and go to “Virtual CD/DVD-ROM”
  • This step may not be necessary because it should be set by default. Go to “Set number of devices” and set it to “1″, you have created your virtual drive. The program will give the virtual drive it’s own drive letter mine happens to “Drive E”
  • So now we can mount our ISO, right click on the icon again and go to Virtual CD/DVD-ROM > Device 0: > Mount image
  • All you have to do now is browse for the iso image and click “Open” now your iso file should be opened

*Update* Check out this quick video tutorial on using Daemon Tools.

TELL ME WHAT TO DO?

Tyler May 1, 2008 at 10:37 am

Hi ameya. There are so many possible reasons to why your games not working. Some games will not run if you have Daemon Tools, Alcohol or any burning tool installed on your system. Try uninstalling them, reboot, retry the game.

WOW! I love you and this site! It was so easy to follow your directions! I can finally open my ISO torrents!

Hey…I heard you on Leo’s podcast and decided to check you out. Cool stuff. Lot’s of useful information on how-to’s. I am going to try some of your tips.

Thanks.

Brandon August 11, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Hey guys, so I see alot of the same questions going on, so hopefully this topic isn’t dead…
1: Mounting: when you mount an iso, (or any image file with the contents of a cd or dvd) right click daemon, and select a drive, then mount. This is EXACTLY what your computer does automatically in windows when you insert the cd. Therefore mounting = inserting cd.
Now, after mounting, it should run auto play. If not, go into My Computer and instead of double clicking D: for your drive, click on the drive letter of daemon (the first is usually E:)
Right click and explore on E: then find autoplay, or setup (for a game). or just explore to find files.
2: “please insert disk”: Remember how mounting is just like inserting a disk. Well windows should automatically find which drive has the disk, so all you need to do is make sure it is mounted. either mount it with daemon/alcohol, and let in run after you’ve installed it (you never really need to unmount daemon, its just equivalent to taking out an unused disk), and the program should find what it is looking for. If you really want put in a disk, you need a program like Nero to burn the ISO, not the data, to the disk. This will make a disk that is equivalent to the original, assuming the iso is equivalent.
So there you go.
Email me at jadellll_dm@hotmail.com for for help if I missed something.

What if the ISO filed downloaded is made from a BLu-ray disk and my PC does not have a Blu-ray player nor anysoftware that plays Blu-rays.
So when I mount the image and click on it, I get a message saying that the format is not recognized…should I find some Bluray software outthere, or should I not even bother at all? Any advice is appreciated

…..BTW I’m not buying a bluray PC for another year at least, I already invested in the PS3, and will let other people to support the format for now.

Hello, I am haveing the problem with “insert disk” I downloaded star wars knighs of the old republic off of a torrent, unacked it, and mounted it, instaled it and everything, but it tells me to insert a disk when I go to play it I followed your instructions on the matter and it still dosn’t work any advice?

Taylor May 13, 2009 at 9:34 pm

Hey, I know how to mount the image and stuff but all the (.iso) i mount just pop up a folder with folders in it .. It doesnt play like i put a disk in.. it just opens a folder with all the (.rsd) in it , does not play like it would if u put an installation disk in.

cookie man May 17, 2009 at 8:58 am

I downloaded daemon tools, then opened the iso image for a game and installed it but then it said to insert disc. help

Tai May 17, 2009 at 11:32 am

It depends on the game you want to mount, most games work differently. Google “the game” with “iso” and “open” all in the same line and see if that comes up with any info. Usually other people will have the same problem and information on how to open the iso.

My solution June 7, 2009 at 8:01 am

I had the “insert cd” problem too. I downloaded Age of Empires 2 with a crack and it wouldn’t work.
I mounted the iso and installed it and tried accessing the game from the image drive but it wouldn’t work.

I went into the Age2 folder and found an .exe file and it let me access the game, so you probably access the game somewhere else :S
None of the shortcuts on my desktop work either.

kasem June 17, 2009 at 10:17 am

When I try to install my software it keeps asking me for a cd, i tried mounting it and doing the autoplay but it still asks me for a cd. what can I do to bypass this?

Brandon June 22, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Ok so i mounted the game but when i go to install it a box pops up and says please go to the control panel to install and configure system compents…Whats the problem?

victor June 23, 2009 at 12:34 am

hello :)
i downloaded a rar-file containing a game. i finished the download with bittorrent. a friend of mine tried to guide me. i downloaded daemon tools but googled for help. when i reached this guide (awsome btw, helped me with other problems) i also installed alcohol 120%.
for some reason neither of these programs (daemon tools and a 120%) will work. i tried to mount an image with dt and unmount it, but i don’t know what to do next. i tried to open the rar-file but i get the messange: failure with the comando-line! (or something like that. i operate with an other language you see.)
i tried to open the rar-file with bittorrent, but i get the messange “not enough memory” i have 3gb ram, so i guess i just did something wrong there -.-”

how do i start the game? do i need the physical cd to succeed? do i need a daemon tools with a red icon? the first version of dt (which i got from their website) were blue. the one i currenly have (tried to find the red one at dt.com’s website. so downloaded an other version) is white , with the bolt being orange/yellow.

ps: i saw in one of your films on this site that when u were done mounting the image using dt, u opened a program called autoplay. do i need that program too? do i need a crack-file to open the game?

Rayna June 28, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Hey, I am using Vista. I am able to mount the image but the programs do not autorun. When I go to Computer and double-click, or right-click and choose autoplay, it STILL does not run. I have to restart my computer 2-3 times and just keep trying to run it until it finally does. Suggestions?

shaieen June 30, 2009 at 3:43 pm

is it only for images?

Danny July 29, 2009 at 11:56 am

Wolvi August 13, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Hello help me..

I download call of duty which has two ISO files CD1 and CD2…i am not able to complete the installation..the 1st one goes half way then” please insert disc 2″ . How do i continue…Help

vasilhs95gr September 3, 2009 at 2:57 am

wolvi: # Right click on that icon and go to “Virtual CD/DVD-ROM”
# This step may not be necessary because it should be set by default. Go to “Set number of devices” and set it to “1″, you have created your virtual drive.

becouse u need two drives not just one u have to do this:
Go to “Set number of devices” and set it to “2″
so now u can run the second iso file as well.

vasilhs95gr September 3, 2009 at 3:08 am

cookie man + all others:
u need to have the rial disk to run your game, otherwise u have to download a crack file (witch is an .exe by the way) change it with the real one (witch isthe exact same file with the same icon but with the protection) in the game’s files (usually in C:\program files\”game’s name or company’s name”\”game’s name if companie’s name before”\) an then play without even using demon tools. hope i helped.

vasilhs95gr September 3, 2009 at 3:12 am

shaieen: no its not an image, its a file wich contains what the real cd/dvd contains but lets u use it as as a cd although it is saved in your pc by using the demon tools program.
