How to remove AVG Free Antivirus

November 21, 2007

*Update – Here’s a tutorial on Uninstalling AVG 8

*Update 2 – Having troubles? Download AVG Remover here http://www.avg.com/download-tools.

I did a tutorial on how to uninstall Norton yesterday so today we will look at how to uninstall another popular anti-virus, AVG free home edition.

Sometimes you have to remove AVG Anti-Virus because it is not operating properly such as updating problems, or maybe it wont open at all and needs to be reinstalled. Whatever your reason may be for removing AVG I have some steps below to follow.

Doing a regular uninstall should remove AVG:

  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Got to Add/Remove Programs or Programs > then to Uninstall a program for Vista users
  • Look for AVG and click on it to highlight it
  • Hit “Remove” and follow the instructions to uninstall AVG

If for some reason AVG uninstall failed using the normal method above, here is also another option for removing the pesky anti-virus.

  • Download the Avg installer here
  • When the download finishes click on the .exe file to run it
  • A Welcome box appears click “Next” and accept the user agreement
  • Now it will scan your computer and check the status of AVG
  • When it finishes scanning you should get options to “Add or Remove Components”, “Repair Installation”, and “Uninstall Product”

AVG no longer links to the AVG installer with the options to add components, repair or uninstall. A Google search for “remove AVG” shows hundreds of AVG users are having this same problem with corrupted unusable AVG anti-virus installations that they cannot get rid if.

I heard CCleaner can remove AVG files give that a try. http://www.ccleaner.com/

cccleaner does not help. My problem is a partial uninstall. I have removed the executables using uninstall, but AVG has itself imbedded somewhere else in my system and I cannot get it out. It isn’t running per se, but I continually get pop-ups reminding me it’s there, do you want to upgrade, it’s turned off, etc.

I even went into everywhere in the registry that had any entries with AVG or the parent company and removed them. That did not help.

I tried downloading the latest software (8.0) because someone’s post said that would provide me with an Uninstall option. It did not.

I don’t see any services running that are obviously named that would indicate an automatically launched service.

I still see .dll’s that I cannot remove. I’m guessing that is where the problem is.

Any help would be appreciated. My email is kmasavage@gmail.com since I will probably never find this site again…

Following the steps worked, however I noticed that on the network adapters there are AVG mini ports still attached.I am unaware if they pose a problem at this time, but want them gone.

Want to download a different antivirus and can’t.
I long to find a site that has this ever present prolific problem and has an even more potent solution.
I have the exact same problem as keith only that i had originally downloaded the version 8 n yeh done the ccleaner thing n not being a computer whizz, dont mess with my registry other than deleting anything with avg attached.
Very reluctant to download another program to remove this problem to inevitably turn into a problem itself.

ocal machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file aAvgApi.exe: creating backup….
Error 0×80070020 %DESTINATION% = “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\aAvgApi.exe.install_backup”, %SOURCE% = “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\aAvgApi.exe”
Error 0×80004004
I have just followed the instructons above and received the above error message.

When I tried to remove it using the Windows add/remove programs it invoked the uninstaller and i received the same message. I am trying to install Panda on my new machine but won’t install until I get rid of AVG. Any one got any ideas.

download REGSEEKER (Google it)…its free
open it up and click installed applications – you will see it on the right hand side.Right click and delete..
If this dont work (as it didnt for me) click “find in registry” on the left, then search for AVG, then delete everything it finds on the right. Worked for me…

I had similar problem on my Windows XP PC. AVG Free (8.0) just reported error and stopped the uninstall process. I rebooted to Safe Mode and run the AVG Free install program that’s available from AVG website (note that you may not be able to uninstall AVG from Control Panel even in Safe Mode), and select uninstall current program when being asked.

gwatts12 February 14, 2009 at 3:02 pm

Thanks webber. I have been trying to uninstall a malfunctioning AVG for a while. I kept getting annoying Error messages. Your solution above worked!

Found this by trial and error:

If uninstalling AVG results in an error, shut down the test center and quit any remaining processes running (cntrl-alt-del). Might be called AVGMC or something like that.

Go to oldversion.com and under security programs find AVG and then the version you have installed. Download it and run it. During the installation it should provide you with the option to uninstall AVG, and do so.
It should complete and once you reboot, AVG is completely removed.

Hope that solves your problem.. it did mine.
