How to extend laptop battery life

December 14, 2007

Laptop batteries generally lasts about three to four hours per charge, but sometimes you just the the battery to lasts a little longer. Here are some helpful tips to extend your laptop battery life a little bit longer.

  • Turn off Wifi - laptop wireless cards continually scan for access points and this means more battery drainage so turn off wifi if you do not need to work online. Most laptops will have a manual switch to turn wifi on and off
  • Turn off the back light on your laptop monitor. The monitor eats up the most juice on a laptop, lower the screen brightness to a comfortable level
  • Avoid using the CD/DVD rom drive. The more this spins the more power it will drain your notebook battery life
  • Disable any scheduled task. Keep unnecessary programs from using extra CPU cycles
  • Older nickel based laptop batteries should be completely drained before charging to ensure a proper charge. Newer laptops using lithium ion batteries do not have to do this
  • Here’s an obvious one, carry a spare battery when traveling

I hope these tips will help improve your laptop battery life for those times when you really need it.
