How to convert AVI video files for the iPad

July 13, 2010

A quick guide on how to convert AVI files so its compatible for the iPad. This should also work for other popular video formats as well.

Step One: Download a copy of Handbrake from their website. They got Windows, Mac and Linux versions.

Step 2: After you’ve installed Handbrake we can start converting our video to work on the iPad. Launch Handbrake and click on “Source” button.

Step 3: Find your video, locate the video you want to convert and click “Open”.

Step 4: With the video in place, we can select our preset video setting. If you don’t see a window on the right hand side you can access it by pressing “Toggle Presets” from the menu.

Select “Apple TV” from the list. I like this preset in terms of resolution and quality and looks great on the iPad.

Step 5: That’s pretty much it, I leave all the settings the way it is but feel free to play with it to your own. Press the “Start” button to begin converting the video.

Step 6: When HandBrake is down converting the video, add it to iTunes, sync it and enjoy.
