How to connect PSP to internet

December 20, 2007

Update: It seems many people have troubles connecting the Internet with their PSP, if you followed my guide and still can’t get online or you get some weird error message go to this PSP Knowledge Center page for troubleshooting.

Many people do not know that the PSP can connect to the Internet and visit web-pages just like a computer although not as refined ad a laptop but it still does the job for a little bit of casual surfing or reading emails. The on-screen keyboard takes a bit getting used to. I would not recommend using the PSP to chat with your friend online to long because the keyboard is a little clumsy.

Connecting the PSP to the internet is pretty easy once you get all your settings in place. Here’s how to connect the psp to the Internet. You will need a wireless router in order to connect the PSP to the internet or you could “borrow” your neighbours wireless access although it’s better to have your own. Wireless routers are very cheap nowadays you could find a good one for about 30 for 50 bucks.

  • With your Psp turned on go to the “Settings” in the menu (scroll to the left)
  • Scroll all the way down until you have reached “Network Settings” and click the “X” button to enter
  • Select “Infrastructure Mode” and hit “X”
  • Select “New Connection” and hit the X button again
  • Now you will have a number of options for connecting to a wireless connection. Choose “Scan” and press the control pad to the left, the PSP will now scan for wifi signals around your area
  • When the PSP finishes scanning you will probably have a few different wifi connections. SSID is the name of the connection, the Security column tells you whether or not the connection is password protected, and the last one is the signal strength the higher the better
  • If you want to borrow your neighbors unprotected wifi select a connection with “None” in the Security column and a strong signal. If you want to use a secure wifi than you will need to know the password. Select one and press the X button
  • Now the Psp will confirm your settings proceed by pressing left on the d-pad and save your settings
  • Now test your connection if you are able to connect, awesome. If you were not able to connect try doing the settings again
  • With the connection settings in place we can now connect the PSP to the internet. In the home menu scroll all the to the left until you have reached “Network” and go down to “Internet Browser” and hit “X”
  • Your browser will appear, select the little square box to enter the web address, play around with the different options. Have fun with your PSP online

IT DOES NOT WORK /DO YOU NEED A USB TO GO TO THE INTERNET.DO YOU HAVE TO BE CLOSE TO THE COMPUTER.

T.M January 25, 2008 at 1:35 pm

You do not need a usb cable you just need to be close to wireless hotspot so your psp will be able to log into the connection. So you need a wireless router.

Dave May 25, 2008 at 12:28 am

There is NO way around using a wireless router? I know this probably sounds stupid, but isn’t they’re some way to use your USB to connect it to your desktop?

Tyler May 25, 2008 at 10:24 am

Sorry Dave there’s no way. You need to connect to a network by wireless.

Caboose May 31, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Errors usually occur when signal strength is weak. How strong is your signal?

i tried connecting the psp with my wireless router, but everytime i press scan, this message appears: “A connection error has occured. The WLAN switch is not turned on.” i dont know what to do or how to turn on the WLAN switch. any ideas???

Tyler July 6, 2008 at 9:28 am

The WLAN switch is on the bottom left hand side side of the PSP, push it upwards to turn it on.

Duncan July 23, 2008 at 9:44 am

or the switch is on the top left if you own a psp slim

ive done everything it says to do but when i try to get on the internet it says a connection error has occured. the attempt to obtain the ip address timed out. what do i do!!!

Eryka September 10, 2008 at 12:44 am

what do they mean by key information exchange has timed out?

Tyler September 10, 2008 at 10:34 am

That could mean that your password settings on your psp is different than the router. I usually get errors like that then I try again and it works fine.
Make sure you have a strong signal as well.

Eryka September 11, 2008 at 3:22 am

what is the router?

Ahmed September 18, 2008 at 9:56 am

This is all about connecting in home!
Wat about in pubic wifi hotspo

shadow September 18, 2008 at 3:45 pm

what is a WEP KEY, OR A WPA-PSK(TKIP) and WPA-PSK(AES)KEYS? where i can find them???
pleaassssssssss help!!! sos

Tyler September 18, 2008 at 7:39 pm

To connect to a public wifi, scan for wifi with the psp and connect to a connection that is not password protected, pick the one with the strongest signal.

Tyler September 18, 2008 at 7:41 pm

A WEP key or WPA Key are wireless connections that are password protected so if the connection is protected with a key you cannot connect to it.

JAYR September 22, 2008 at 6:23 pm

I bought a 2nd hand PSP last month. I wanted to put a PIN code for security purposes but the it seems the unit had it already. Now i have no idea what the password the last owner had put into.

Tyler September 23, 2008 at 10:04 am

Hey Jayr, try resetting the password by going to System settings then Restore Default settings.

tech84 October 9, 2008 at 5:58 am

Jason December 21, 2008 at 2:06 am

ok, mine says it runs out of time to find the ISP address bar?

Peter December 29, 2008 at 11:22 am

My scan is picking up the correct SSID but under “security” it is flashing “Not Supported” and signal strength is 100%. No other options. The router in the house is getting a signal to our laptop and main PC – why can’t my PSP pick up the internet?

Tyler December 30, 2008 at 9:30 am

Here’s a nice link for troubleshooting PSP Internet connection problems http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=472

Peter December 31, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Thanks Tyler for the contact. Found out PSP only supports WEP security level and nothing more robust – need to decide whether to lower my router security setting to WEP or stay with WPA2-PSK and loose any chance of getting my PSP online.
