How to connect PSP to internet

December 20, 2007

Update: It seems many people have troubles connecting the Internet with their PSP, if you followed my guide and still can’t get online or you get some weird error message go to this PSP Knowledge Center page for troubleshooting.

Many people do not know that the PSP can connect to the Internet and visit web-pages just like a computer although not as refined ad a laptop but it still does the job for a little bit of casual surfing or reading emails. The on-screen keyboard takes a bit getting used to. I would not recommend using the PSP to chat with your friend online to long because the keyboard is a little clumsy.

Connecting the PSP to the internet is pretty easy once you get all your settings in place. Here’s how to connect the psp to the Internet. You will need a wireless router in order to connect the PSP to the internet or you could “borrow” your neighbours wireless access although it’s better to have your own. Wireless routers are very cheap nowadays you could find a good one for about 30 for 50 bucks.

  • With your Psp turned on go to the “Settings” in the menu (scroll to the left)
  • Scroll all the way down until you have reached “Network Settings” and click the “X” button to enter
  • Select “Infrastructure Mode” and hit “X”
  • Select “New Connection” and hit the X button again
  • Now you will have a number of options for connecting to a wireless connection. Choose “Scan” and press the control pad to the left, the PSP will now scan for wifi signals around your area
  • When the PSP finishes scanning you will probably have a few different wifi connections. SSID is the name of the connection, the Security column tells you whether or not the connection is password protected, and the last one is the signal strength the higher the better
  • If you want to borrow your neighbors unprotected wifi select a connection with “None” in the Security column and a strong signal. If you want to use a secure wifi than you will need to know the password. Select one and press the X button
  • Now the Psp will confirm your settings proceed by pressing left on the d-pad and save your settings
  • Now test your connection if you are able to connect, awesome. If you were not able to connect try doing the settings again
  • With the connection settings in place we can now connect the PSP to the internet. In the home menu scroll all the to the left until you have reached “Network” and go down to “Internet Browser” and hit “X”
  • Your browser will appear, select the little square box to enter the web address, play around with the different options. Have fun with your PSP online

I bought myself a new psp for christmas and have been unable to connect it to the internet yet, i have a laptop with verizon wireless air card internet access. Most people have dial up or dsl an i’ve yet to see someone ask a question about connecting with an air card. Also i’ve been unable to download music an pictures successfully, when i put them on my psp i’m unable to listen to the music or view the pictures, its just like blank space on the memory stick duo. So please if anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it, i have a free dowload for a movie that came with the psp but i have to connect my psp to the internet to download it, i’m just hoping to get it downloaded before the experation date runs out. Thanks for your time.

I have four other devices in my home that connect to my wireless router. The PSP is the only device that is having problems. Question: My router is ‘hidden’, but all the other devices had no problem finding it once I identified the SSID and security key in each device — can the PSP be connected via a hidden router?

My router is on a different floor, and I have no problem with internet access with my laptop or PS3, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening with my PSP. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or not. Normally I wouldn’t mind so much, but I already purchased a game for about $32 that I can’t play or exchange. If anyone knows about what to do here, please e-mail me. I’d greatly appreciate any help.
