How to calibrate a hdtv for cheap

October 21, 2008

I just bought a nice HDTV and would like it to look the best possible. I don’t want to pay professionals hundreds of dollars to come and calibrate my HDTV so is there another cheaper way to get the best possible picture from my HDTV?

HDTV’s are often set to bright and in some very bright video mode like “Vivid” out of the box cause they want you to notice the HDTV’s on the showroom floor at your retailers. So simply by changing your video mode to something like “Movie” mode will drastically improve the picture quality.

A easy and inexpensive way to calibrate a HDTV is with a disc like Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics (Blu-Ray). For about 17 bucks this Blu-Ray disc comes with all the instructions you need to set your HDTV to optimum quality.

Another way to set up your HDTV with a regular DVD player for little cost if you already have a copy of a DVD with the “THX Optimizer”, DVD’s like the Incredibles have this in the option. Here’s a video showing how to optimize using this method http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1975752,00.asp
