How do I play .avi files

I downloaded a few different .avi movie files but the don’t seem to play with Windows Media player. I can hear the audio but I can’t see the video, any suggestions on how I can play .avi files?
It’s most likely you don’t have the proper codec installed on you computer. Here’s what you can do, download VLC media player it’s completely free. VLC can play just about every file format known to man including those .avi files. VLC will solve your video codec issue and now you should be able to see the actual video as well as hear the audio.
