Forgot admin password

October 29, 2007

Have you forgotten your administrator password for XP or 2000? Here’s one way to reset administrator password and get back into action.

  • Download this free program Download Emergency Boot CD
  • After you have downloaded the application burn it onto a CD
  • Stick the Cd into the computer you would like to change the admin password and reboot
  • A menu comes up, pick option 5 and press “enter”
  • Now it will display the SCSI drives hit “enter”
  • It will ask if you would like to probe the SCSI drives we do not want to so hit “enter” again
  • The CD will select the drive and partition to fix. Unless you have multiple drives and multiple installs of Windows XP or 2000 then the one chosen by default is most likely the right one so press “enter”
  • Now the Boot cd wants the path to the registry, a normal Windows path looks like this \Windows\System32\config. But you probably do not need to worry about this the boot cd should have found the path now hit “enter” again
  • Now it will ask you which hives to edit, just hit “enter”
  • A menu should appear, select “1″ to edit user password
  • A list of users names will appear, select the “Administrator” then click “enter”
  • In the next dialog box type in this symbol without the quotes ” * ” and press enter. This will erase the current administrator password and leave it blank, you do not need to change the password right now we can do this in Windows
  • Press “Y” to confirm
  • Type this symbol without quotes ” ! ” and hit enter to escape password editor
  • We are back in the main menu now type ” q ” to quit
  • It will show you files that were changed and ask if you want to write them. We need to select “y” and press “enter” to complete the process
  • Now wait for the files to be written and reboot Windows, you have reseted administrator password, now you can log into it and give it a password

But how will you log in if you forgotten the password? If you do remember your password, give it that same password after you reset it. Another good free program to look at is http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ do a search on Youtube and you will see videos on how it works.
