Connecting HDMI to PS3

August 18, 2008

“How do I connect a HDMI cable to my PS3? I was using the regular red/yellow/white cables before and it’s still plugged in but I’m not sure if I’m getting anything to the PS3 through my HDMI cables.”

The PS3 has a auto-detect feature that detects which connection is being used and will set it as default.

Auto-Detect PS3 Connection:

  • Disconnect any previous cables you were using for the PS3
  • With PS3 off connect the HDMI cable to the PS3 and the TV
  • Hold down the PS3 power button, it will beep once but keep holding down the power for another 5 seconds till you get another beep
  • If all went well the PS3 should be set to the HDMI connection

If the above did not work than do it manually.

Manually Connecting PS3 HDMI:

  • Connect both the AV cables (white/red/yellow) and HDMI cables to the TV and PS3
  • Now turn on the PS3 and go to the “Settings” and then “Display Settings” then “Video Output Settings”. Select “HDMI”
  • Now we need to do the same for the audio. Go to “Settings” > “Sound Settings” > “Audio Output Settings” and change it to “HDMI”

Now you can enjoy the PS3 in glorious high definition with HDMI.

i have tried this both ways and, although this worked for me last time i set up my ps3 with the HDMI when i first got my ps3 it now does not. both ways, i switch onto the HDMI channel and the screen is blank/black for about 20 seconds and then turns blue with “no signal” written on the screen. my tv has 2 HDMI ports on it and i have tried with both. there is nothing wrong with my ps3, it works with the VGA cables. is it my tv, is it my hd cord, is it my ps3, or am i jut retarded at setting stuff up?

I ,like a few of the other posters, can’t get a picture via HDMI. System works fine with cables, but not HDMI. The HDMI used to work fine until a thunderstorm. I had tech come out to look at the TV. He tested the TV and the HMDI inputs all worked fine. However, all my components (A/V Receiver, PS3, and HD cable boxes) did not work with HDMI anymore (all of these work with component cables). The tech explained that the lightning storm caused an issue with software on the boards (EPROM). This software is needed for the handshakes to work with HDMI devices. I got a new cable box, but I still don’t know how to fix the software with AV receiver or PS3. I may need EPROM chips. If anyone is knowledgable on the subject, please post a reply.

BTW, all my devices were hooked up thru a surge protector. The tech advised this is a common problem, and recommends unplugging if lighting is nearby.

Hi ALL

King, i have exactly the same issue. There was a thunderstorm and voila…my PS3 will turn on. Eject and receive discs…but there is no picture at all via HDMI. The RC cables work fine but i cant stand the SD qaulity! My router, TV, Laptop and few other devices are all connected to one multiplug for power…only the PS3 seems to have bombed out. I have yet to find a solution…

I will reitterate and ask – if anyone has a solution to this problem, please post! :) Thanks in advance

This was great!!! Im so happy :) ive been trying to get my ps3 set up with HDMI since i got it :) one thing i did note, when you do it manually as i had to do.. when you change to HDMI on the display settings and the screen goes black you then need to change your TV to the HDMI chanel or whatever on your tv (at least i did). Im super happy :) thanks for the help xD

Thanks for this, cleared up a few questions I had!

John smith June 11, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Worked very well after I read this!! When you select hdmi and the screen goes black, this is when you change to the hdmi input on your t.v., should be gtg then!!

Jong Sub Kim July 26, 2011 at 8:45 pm

yeah… but mine doesn’t work when i tried the display setting it fails… they tell me to wait 30sec and it turns to the black screen and after 30sec, still, it doesn’t work(480i)
Help me!

Initially I couldn’t get it to work using either method. I found that when I disconnected the cable and then connected it again while the ps3 was on (I’d connected it first time while it was off) it worked just fine. Then with both cables attached I used the manual method.

Short version – connect the cable while your ps3 is on.
