“I don’t own a PS3 right now but I just heard about the new PS3 Slim so I’m thinking it’s time to join the bandwagon. I have a good collection of PS2 games though, so can the new PS3 Slim play PS2 games?”
The backwards compatibility was taken out of previous PS3 models and there were some rumors early on that this new PS3 Slim would be backwards compatible but Sony had since squashed those rumors.
John Koller is the marketing director for SCEA and here’s what he said about the whole issue during a Kotaku interview:
Now that we’re at a point where we’re three years into the lifecycle of the PS3, there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think and noticed this from our research that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]
And it’s not just like 50 or 60 percent. It’s well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they’re ready to jump into the PlayStation 3

Did any of you ever stop to think that maybe it is another money making gimmick by Sony. Think about this… it has been how many years since PS3 came out? They made the first few models backwards compatable just long enough to get dependant on the PS3 and dispose of their PS2 since it is now obsolete. After that, they take away your ability to play PS2 games on your PS3, and conveniently enough they still have BRAND FUCKING NEW PS2S. How many years later is it?
I can see how some ppl are pissed at this, I’m not happy but more pissed over the Torx Screws than the Backwards Compatibility, I had some 70+ games before buying my PS3 slim 320GB Moves package, I can’t play them, but their not going to waste, do you guys have any idea how easy and quick it is to sell PS2 games on Ebay? It only take me MAX 2 days to get a reply on some of the most obscure games in my collection.
Point is, no matter what change Sony makes to THEIR console, some ppl are going to be happy and other are not, but seriously, do you really think sony cares about what any little consumer that pays 200-300-400 or even 500 dollars for a console says, thinks or does?…no, they make millions, they care about their projected sales and what the “buzz” of an idea creates, either buy it and deal with it, or dont, you’ll be hurting them more not buying their crappy product if you dont like it…Right?

“LOL.” Then why can the PS3 play PS1 games? By your logic, everyone should have to buy a Ps1 to play PS1 games. I don’t have a PS1, so I’m glad for PS3 emulation, but why couldn’t they had keeped PS2 backwards compatible like the PS3 phats had?
Dave Mustaine has a point, just buy a pre owned PS2 from a car boot for £10 or less if you really need to have PS2 backwards compatability.
I think they should have kept the backward compatibility.
I do keep my old systems, but who wants every system they own hooked up, or have to go root around in the closet, attic, basement, etc. to find the console to play a game on? It’s such a pain to swap out consoles and it takes a lot of room to have them hooked up all the time.
MUCH easier and convenient to have one system that plays many generations of games.
In some cases I can see them not providing backward capability, but they already had consoles that offered them, and it is nice to go back and play older games on older systems from time to time, especially those in extended series that stretch over consoles.
In the case of PS2 games, there are so many GOOD PS2 games out there, and that system was around for so long, I think it’s a bit stupid to not offer backward compatibility on newer models. Whether you have or can get a PS2 still is not the point. I could see, say, if they did away with PSOne capabilities.
From a business point it makes sense but from a consumer point it’s annoying.

I bought my PS3 to play ps3 games AND to play classic ps2 games such as FF10. Its bullshit that they just took out the backwards compatibility. Making the hard drive bigger to keep the costs up is bullshit. If i had known, i would have bought one of those fat things when they were brand new, took out the crap hard drive and replaced it with a beast.

it’s isn’t that ppl are buying the ps3 to play ps2 games it’s just that compatibility should be an obvious addition to any new console. it isn’t as if it costs them much to add it because it doesn’t. in fact it loses them money by not adding it. i wanted to get a ps3 but what’s the point? i bought all those ps2 games that i still love to play but now cant because my ps2 is busted and sony decided to be like microsoft and try to get extra cash by being douche bags. in the end i still want to play my ps2 games, i cant do that on a ps3 i might as well get a new ps2 for cheaper. i know i want to play my ps2 games and when i go to best buy there is really not an over abundance of ps3 games that i feel i need to pay up the ass to get by buying an overpriced system that does not any longer deliver everything it was originally advertised to do. so sorry Sony, i don’t know where you are getting these surveys from but it’s wrong and it’s costing you.
I think that the ps3 should play ps2 games because sony makes both consoles so they should at least make the ps3 slim(s) play ps2 games. But what gets me really mad is the ps3 commercials, because it says “it only does everything”, YOU’RE A BUNCH OF LIARS, IT CAN’T PLAY PS2 GAMES CAN IT?
I love my PS3, bought it when it first came out in 2006 and it still works, compared to my xbox 360 that got the red rings of death twice. I never owned a PS2. I just loved ps3 because it was well put together and had all the features a console should have without buying more accessories. I am pretty piss that the newer slimmer model isnt backwards compatible. As I want to buy an additional ps3 for our bedroom.
Im getting old so new games doesn’t really excite me anymore. When I first bought the PS3 one of my first games I purchased was Raiden III and Gradius V, both PS2 games that are classic in the arcades. So if my old Ps3 dies, those games becomes useless and I’m not going to buy a ps2 just to play it.

thats complete bullshit .All PS3′s shoud have backwards compatibility.Thats what console designer do.Think about it,when they came out with the PS3 people threw away(or sold)thier PS2′s.Then they came out with the PS3 slim so perhaps people threw away(or sold)thier fat PS3′s thinking the slim could play ps2 games but when it couldn’t they just so happens to be selling ps2s still. seem weird?
I recently found out that the reason why they took out ps2
compatibility is because it can play (ps2 import game)
meaning JAPAN ONLY games. Hope this help you guys ^.^

Its strange that my playstation can play the playstation 1 games but not the second while it has a inbuild memory card for both of them. It doesnt make any sense at all. {When I didnt knew that this was possible} I was like: ok, Lets see if I can play this one…answer..Put a playstation 3 game into your console…wtf?…. I mean c,mon If you dont want to let people play your old games on your new consoles then dont inbuild some memory cards you cant even use!. Whats the point to that?. They should say buy the old playstation 2 instead. But not make your console all filled up with stupid databanks and all that while you cant use them…
When they made the PS2, it played the ps1 games and even read the memory cards for the ps1. Why would you go and change the PS3 like that? It was a stupid idea and just another way to piss people off and make more money! What a joke!!!!

First of all, i have both ps3s. The backwards compatible ps3 is awesome and all but it froze alot on ps2 games. The newer ones offer assistance.
You might only use your PS3 for PS3 games, but others use theirs for PS1 games or as a Blu Ray player. I shouldn’t have to buy an extra system,because you have a problem with that. I couldn’t help but read most of the comments on here and had to respond, it figures most of you are idiots and their are a few here that got it right the 1st time, Sony know exactly what their doing [all comes down to money/profits & current buzz], the other thing YOU people seem to have missed is that the 3rd generation ps3 [the ps3 with 80GB hard drive is backwards compatible only], not the 40GB or the 60GB as originally intended. Remember only the ps3 with 4 USB Ports is ps2 compatable. Sony also [if you remember] to away the power to use the first 3 generations of the FAT ps3′s capability to be a powerful multimedia pc with bluray player. Which they have kept in the 1st generation slimline ps3 [2 USB ports, ps2 non-compatible]. The buzz is that the next ps console the PS4 will also be non ps2 compatible, but ps3 compatible, with the option to have full 3d and virtual riality simulation technology built in the 1 generation PS4′s.

I grew up with the Playstation brand since long as I can remember from the PS1 days. Many great games I played on the PS1 and PS2 but why on Earth would Sony re-move the compatibility on the new slim models why they leave us European’s out and only North America and Japan? PS3 will probably be the last console I’ll ever buy from Sony if they keep this nonsense up. Even though I have my original fat PS2 I still miss playing my PS2 games on the PS3 system so that my PS2 lasts a few more years. Thanks Sony.

The problem is a lot of us just got rid of our PS2′s when the PS3 came out. And yes, Uncharted, GTA4, Assassin’s Creed, MW2, and LA Noire are all awesome. HOWEVER, sometimes we like to take a stroll down memory lane and play some amazing PS2 games that are just gathering dust on our shelves. I have been DYING to play Metal Gear Solid 3, so much so that I am actually going to buy that “MGS HD Collection” when it comes out next month. In my case, I gave my PS2 to a friend for his birthday right after i got the origional PS3 which did play Ps2 games. Once I got the lovely Yellow Light, I bought a brand new slim PS3. Set up my internal PS2 memory card (because for some reason they never took that out) and put in “GTA San Andreas” only to get an error message. So I tried “Bully”, same message. It was then I realized my PS2 days were officially over.
I agree. WHY THE FUCK DID SONY NOT MAKE THE 2nd GENERATION PS3 COMPATIBLE WITH ALL SYSTEM GAMES? IT’S POINTLESS! I say we petition for a 3rd gen slim that plays all three, DVD, blue ray, and can hold at least 160GB, built in small fan, along with being able to upgrade GB size to a max of 426GB.
