Can I insert a PS2 OR a PS CD in PS3?
UPDATE: All PS3 ( 80 GB and 160 GB ) models currently being manufactured do not support PS2 or PS1 games. The last model that supported backwards compatibility was the 80 GB model number “CECHE01″ which is no longer being made. More info..
Not all PS3 consoles can play PS2 games. Currently the only Playstation 3 model that can play Playstation 2 and the original Playstation games is the 80 GB model. The 40 GB PS3 will not play PS2 games but will play some PSone games.
The older model PS3′s that are no longer being made could also play PS2 and PS1 games they are the 20 GB and the 60 GB model but those are no longer in production.
Not all PS2 games will work, if there is a certain game you are dying to play but not sure if it’s compatible with the PS3 then check out Sony’s Compatibility page, here you can enter the game title and see it that game title will work for the PS3. You can see lists of compatible games or games with known issues.

I have an old 80g it played all and had the media hub built in but it over heated and like many the gpu slipped off the cpu… my 160g plays PS1 but sadly not PS2. If I recall with the PS2 system data DL I used to be able to play PS2 games on my 160g… my HDD went out, sent it to Sony and when I got it back couldn’t play ps2 games anymore, even with the software data.
maybe the new HDDs wont support the PS2 system data? …u know I think before I sent it to Sony I was using my old 80g HDD in my 160 and if im right I was playing my FF12 before sending it in with the old dead HDD in it
Why don’t they play ps2 games its the stupidest thing ever.. I geuss ill just go smoke some more crack and stick with the xbox 360 at least I can find a game that works for it. I geuss my ps2 realy did have a porpouse… sony you piss me off!!!
Why the fuck would play station go from being able to play old games to not? That doesn’t make any sense. I just got a new ps3 for my birthday because my old ps3 doesn’t work as well as it used and I thought getting a new one would be better than fixing the old one. Then I’m told they don’t play old games anymore. Guess I’m returning the new ps3 and getting the old one fixed but I think that’s bullshit. I’m so angry.
I want to get a ps3 and I heard the new ps3 does not play ps2 games and I am happy about that because we are moving on

you all can play ps2 games in ps3 only in new version ps3 which has blueray dvd but u havw to install memeor card to continue your gamind reign
look u can some how make ps2 games work u gonna need to download ps2 bios and download the oldest update for ps3 and replace the ps3 bios with the ps2 one but its a bit risky
How can Sony do this to it’s customers? Just another reason to not buy anything Sony. I bet the PS4 won’t even play PS3 games… what a rip-off
