Can PS3 play PS2 games

March 25, 2008

Can I insert a PS2 OR a PS CD in PS3?

playstation2

UPDATE: All PS3 ( 80 GB and 160 GB ) models currently being manufactured do not support PS2 or PS1 games. The last model that supported backwards compatibility was the 80 GB model number “CECHE01″ which is no longer being made. More info..

Not all PS3 consoles can play PS2 games. Currently the only Playstation 3 model that can play Playstation 2 and the original Playstation games is the 80 GB model. The 40 GB PS3 will not play PS2 games but will play some PSone games.

The older model PS3′s that are no longer being made could also play PS2 and PS1 games they are the 20 GB and the 60 GB model but those are no longer in production.

Not all PS2 games will work, if there is a certain game you are dying to play but not sure if it’s compatible with the PS3 then check out Sony’s Compatibility page, here you can enter the game title and see it that game title will work for the PS3. You can see lists of compatible games or games with known issues here.

If I were to buy RockBand Track Pack 1 would it play on my PS3 RockBand2? As a part of my “normal” game play as songs in sets?

I’ve not seen Track Pack 1 songs for PS3

Foo December 30, 2009 at 9:21 am

The PS3 is a piece of shit. I hate complicated things and all I want to do is put in my game and play, I don’t need whatever the hell is on that game system. I have tons of PS2 games and my brother just got the PS3. Being the idiot that he is, he believed that the PS3 could play PS2 games so he freakin sold the PS2 to earn some money for some PS3 games. Imagine the surprise I felt when he was WRONG.

I hate him and the PS3.

Cassandra January 1, 2010 at 1:33 am

ps3 is good bt coast u alot of money to buy a CD so i dont knw i sell my ps2 and buy ps3 or wat??

SALAMINIZER_1 February 3, 2010 at 11:09 am

Hey FOO,
Sounds like you and your brother should get gay married!! I love your ignorant little rant. You see, when people have HD tvs a PS3 is useful. It looks a million times better than the PS2′s 480P top resolution. God, you sound like my 65 yr old dad!!

Charlton February 4, 2010 at 1:03 pm

yeah this is a big disappointment! i heard the ps3 sales went down big time! i have to agree that the ps2 is the best!! my ps2 is modded and it can play both imports/copies of psx and playstation 2 games. PS3 is just garbage, seems like Sony was more worried about making money more than satisfying its customers. yesterday i was at a friends house and i tryed to play “Wheel of fortune” for ps2 on his ps3 and it wouldnt play, sayed the ps3 wasnt compatiable to play ps2 games. and i dont know why only certain models of the ps3 can play ps2 and ps1 games, but the newer versions cant…… well i hope ps3 is the last playstation system from SONY. i believe ps2 is the best and the oldschool and newschool games rocked! i love diversity, too bad the ps3 only has newer version graphics, =(

ps3 sucks February 21, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Joey March 6, 2010 at 9:05 pm

PC TEch March 31, 2010 at 8:20 am

This gets me mad. With the high-tech the PS3 is and no backward compatibility? That is just stupid.

kimo1125 April 5, 2010 at 10:43 am

please i want to know how i can play ps2 in ps3 i need your help please

Matthew April 28, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Some of you little boys and girls really need to look at your spelling and grammar. Can anyone please translate the following gibberish for me?
“ps3 is good bt coast u alot of money to buy a CD so i dont knw i sell my ps2 and buy ps3 or wat??”

The person who wrote that unintelligible crap needs to look to the future…PS4, or even PS5, when you’re an adult and don’t have your parents to buy your consoles and games for you. You’ll need a JOB to pay for your games, consoles and DVD’s….and no one in the right mind will give the person who wrote the above a job if they fill in an application form like that. Same goes for all of you kids using “text speak”..or “txt spk”. The reason you use such abbreviations on a cell/mobile phone is because of limited space. Here you do not have limited space…..so use it. As at the moment you come across as a generation of little retards. And the “my console is better than yours” bullshit compounds it further.

Matthew April 28, 2010 at 4:06 pm

…oh, and even the person who wrote the article itself doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Every single PS3 that rolled off the production line….*ever*…can play original Playstation (PSOne) games. The problem with PS3 backwards compatibility is with PS2 games. Early models of the big style PS3 played PS2 games via either hardware, or software emulation. Now, I’m afraid, all models of PS3 in production (and for some time now) do NOT play PS2 games. Here is the final word on PS3 backwards compatibility:
20GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) – Yes
60GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) – Yes
80GB with 4 USB slots (no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) – Yes
40GB (2 USB slots, no longer in production) – NO
80GB with 2 USB slots – NO
160GB (2 USB slots) – NO
120GB (2 USB slots) – NO
250GB (2 USB slots) – NO
Any other up coming PS3′s – Probably not….but who knows.

However, I repeat, ALL PS3′s play PS1 games….ALL of them.

Akshat May 24, 2010 at 12:21 pm

What I want to know is, that if I keep my PlayStation (PSone) games on my PC as backup, then burn them on a CD, will they play on my PlayStation 3 slim version?

EUGUNE June 1, 2010 at 12:02 am

halo all … erk i hear people said ps3 only can play original cd … cannot play ps2 copyright cd … in malaysia very hard to sell the ps3 because the cd very expensive..

Dane June 4, 2010 at 4:28 am

The creators of ps3 must have been smoking crack not to realise that tons of people wish to play ps2 games. Mainly due to the face that most people sold there ps2 not knowing the horrible truth of the ps3 system modification. They let so many people down…

Rhys June 20, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Paul July 24, 2010 at 10:58 pm

answer to Rhys, go to http://www.gamefaq.com, then go 2 SAVES, select a game, and then just pick a download

Sword-of-Rapture July 29, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Well I for one am a die hard final fantasy and squaresoft/square enix game fan and alot of those PS2 games only occur on that system. like a total retard i sold my PS2 because after i bought my PS3 my friends all said that they play PS2 games so i sold it. but seems how everyone already has this problem, and instead of bitchin on the internet like a jackass why dont we all just send nice emails to sony to ask for a patch/fix/software update or whatever. im pretty sure they might answer if enough people ask.

Sword-of-Rapture July 29, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Oh and im pretty sure anyone bitchin about these problems would gladly pay $10 – $20 for software that enables us to play our beautiful stacks of games. i know i would

ArmandAngel August 5, 2010 at 6:16 am

hmmm I landed here while researching about PS3 since I’m planning to store my PS2. Seems there are problems with the PS3 though I would love to play the Final Fantasy games there.. So after reading this post I ended up still planning when to buy the PS3. Right now I’m checking out prices on PS2 HDD modded version here in our country which they sell for around $140 since I’m not planning to sell my PS2 “ever”.

James August 5, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I can’t get ps2 games to work on my ps3 250 gb

NK August 17, 2010 at 4:28 am

eckbroon August 18, 2010 at 12:34 am

Just did some research on the PS3 backwards compatibility and cannot believe the newer models do not support PS2 games. The PS2 is one of the most successful consoles of all time and over the years an impressive catalogue of classic games has been created. I personally spent thousands building up my games collection and still regularly play lots of the games even today. Whilst I understand the production cost & size issues that Sony have to consider, I still think they shot themselves in the foot by removing backward compatibility. As several other people have already mentioned on here, buying a PS3 would have been a no brainer for me. However, after reading all this I will probably stick with my PS2 and hold off on a new purchase.

Vysh August 19, 2010 at 8:47 am

Hey, There’s this new thing called “google”! Maybe I could use it to find out why sony took the emotion engine out of the newer PS3s. Oh, so they took it out because they were losing money; that’s also why the price dropped. Also, they are working on an emulator for every PS3 model. It’ll take awhile, considering the PS3 now lacks the emotion engine.

Claire August 23, 2010 at 1:12 am

There is a simple temporary answer to the problem. If you sold your PS2 when you brought your PS3 just go out and buy another preowned PS2. They’re cheap enough at the moment, approx £20 on average with games, memory cards, controllers etc etc. Thus you can then play your PS2 games to your heart’s content until Sony wake’s up to the gamer’s demand for backwards compatability.

Personally I would stick with the PS2 for now because I cannot see any real benefit in owning a PS3 except for improved graphics. I just want to enjoy playing a game without it costing the earth.

Broder August 24, 2010 at 6:00 am
