Blu-Ray vs HD DVD

February 4, 2008

Warner Bros, recently decided to drop HD DVD and go exclusive with Blu-Ray. What does that mean? That means the high definition format war is coming close the end. Blu-Ray now has over 70 percent of the hi-def movies on the market.

Things aren’t looking very good for HD DVD right now, although it’s a little premature to say Blu-Ray has won the format war. HD DVD camp is fighting back by slashing prices on HD DVD players but it could be too little to late. In my personal opinion HD DVD is a great format with solid HD DVD players that works great with all movies, where as the Blu-Ray players are more complicated.

It seems certain Blu-Ray players can do some things others can’t at least not without a firmware upgrade and you could only do that if the Blu-Ray player has a Ethernet port to connect online. Certain new features such as PIP (picture in picture) may not work on older Blu-Ray players without a firmware update. That is why I would recommend buying a Playstation 3 for your Blu-Ray playback because it’s go a Ethernet port for updates, it’s fairly cheap, and it plays games.

I think it’s pretty safe now to say the whole Blu Ray versus HD DVD thing is almost over and the sooner the better.
