Block MSN messenger

August 15, 2008

I have a computer that’s running Vista – How do i disable MSN Windows Live Messenger? Is there a way to block msn messenger at the router?

Blocking MSN messenger through the router is not very effective. The messenger uses these ports port 1493, 1542, 1863, 1963 and if you block any of those ports from your router it would just go to the standard port 80 which would block all web traffic through th router. Not good at all.

You could try blocking MSN messenger through the host file, here’s a guide on how to block sites using Windows host file.

Add this line to your host file “127.0.0.0 gateway.messenger.hotmail.com” without the quotes. And continue to add sites like Messenger Online which allows users to talk online through the browser.

There are always ways around this and people can figure out how to get around these things pretty easily. There are a lot of other chat services they can use to replace MSN or connect to MSN with another chat client.
