Friday, October 26th, 2007

Blu-Ray (not Blue-Ray) disc is the next generation disc format for storing digital files and high definition videos. The name Blu-Ray comes from the blue laser that is used to read and write the discs. The laser used for Blu-Ray has a shorter wavelength than the ones used for regular DVD’s so a lot more data can be stored in a single Blu-Ray disc. Single layer Blu-ray disc can hold up to 25 gigabytes and a dual layer can hold 50 gigabytes. To compare, a standard dvd can hold 4.7 gigabyte and the dual layer dvd can store up to 8.5 gb.

This is just one of many reasons why HDMI is more favorable than other audio video interfaces such as S-Video, composite, and component video.
